1. What is your favorite song and why?
Damn. I can't think of just one! I think today it's "Misty Mountains Cold" out of the Hobbit, but that's because I loved that book since Dad read it to me a chapter a night when I was a little kid. And I like dwarves singing. So.
2. What is your ‘happy thought’?
I think of places I love. Home. London. Toronto. Thinking of all the places I'll get to go when I'm done with my studies is one of my driving motivators.
3. Would you rather be an anxious genius or a joyful simpleton?
Anxious genius, I'm afraid. I can't stand the idea of not being able to think.
4. What is the best ‘little act of kindness’ that someone has ever done for you?
My favorite anonymous little act of kindness was when the person ahead of me bought my coffee/breakfast in the drive-through at Starbucks. Though possibly the best general-level act of kindness is my financial aid counselor going out of his way to push my paperwork through so I have money to eat. >_>
5. Favorite kind of pasta?
Speaking of eating. Whole wheat penne! (With a roasted garlic cream sauce and chicken and mushrooms and caramelized onions and pine nuts and thisiswhyyourefat.com)
6. Would you like to go an adventure?
I'm a bit of a hobbit, but I'd run into the TARDIS. Or off with a wizard. I'd probably want to pack a bag first, though.
7. Where do you go when you want to be alone?
I go to one of a number of places on campus. My favorite is a grad student lounge that nobody seems to know exists. Sometimes people will drop in quietly for five minutes to microwave their lunch or wait for someone, but I can spend hours in there in marvelous silence. Power outlet, internet, comfortable chair. A close tie is this place where I'm rarely alone but I'm definitely left alone.
8. Would you ever clean ALL the things?
I have cleaned ALL THE THINGS. I was taught how to clean ALL THE THINGS by my parents, who were taught to clean ALL THE THINGS in the military.
9. The most inspirational person in your life?
My friend the stoic bastard. He has been through more shit in his life than I can express. He's strong, but (after badgering him for it years ago) he does talk to me about it when he's having problems. This guy should have been dead in nine months when I met him. That was fifteen years ago and he's still going. And he's still the most generous person I've ever met, helping people long after they've proven they aren't worth it.
10. Are you more likely to regret forever or to make an effort to amend?
Amend. No question. I've even amended with people who didn't deserve it. >_>
11. Favorite quote?
“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
"They're not the same at all!"
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"
MY POINT EXACTLY.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
