oh damn this was sloppy of me!! this is what I get for answering asks without thinking. so what I mean is mostly: wolf eels are not actually in the same order as eels (same kingdom, phylum, and class) and differ from “true eels” because they has paired gill slits and pectoral fins. visual of a cladogram:

A brief question: under what circumstances should a work be tagged "Not [X] Friendly"? Does it indicate that a work explicitly hates on X, or just that X is not portrayed in the work in a positive light (whether because it is not portrayed at all or because reasonable consequences/complications are introduced)?

that’s honestly a very vague phrase so it’s hard to say. some ways I can think of ‘not [thing] friendly’ being used:

as you suggested: writer portrays [thing] negatively. i.e. ‘not Xavier friendly’ in a fic where Professor X is characterized as manipulative and unscrupulous.

a warning the content might be painful or hurtful to a particular group of people because of triggering content. i.e. ‘not abuse survivor friendly’ in a fic where an abuse victim justifies their abuser’s actions and not contradicted for narrative reasons.

narrative demands cause [thing] to be portrayed negatively. i.e. ‘not [hero] friendly’ in a story that’s told from (and sympathetic to) the villain’s point of view.

[thing] is a character and they undergo a lot of torment in the story. i.e. ‘not Shiro friendly’ because shiro is recaptured by the Galra and the story focuses on Shiro’s misery/torment.

[thing] has a ‘bad end’. i.e. ‘not Zelink friendly’ because Zelda and Link break up in the story.

again, as you suggested: [thing] is being lampooned/parodied/talked down/hated on. i.e. ‘not Kylux friendly’ because the story portrays the ship as absurd or is explicitly dragged in some way not intended to make a Kylux fan laugh. (we used to call this ‘[thing]-bashing’. nowadays I would honestly expect a fic that’s explicitly written to tear [thing] to shreds would be tagged ‘anti-[thing]’ rather than ‘not [thing] friendly’.)

I’m sure there’s other reasons, too, but these are the first things to come to mind.

You'd made a "cracking a cold one open with the boys" pic using my artwork and vefanyar reblogged it! and I was tickled that someone I definitely didn't know had somehow chosen my Helcaraxe painting. And then I saw that you were reblogging ancient Roman jokes? And that sold me for good.

I REMEMBER THAT POST, that was a terrible joke and I’m still proud of it. (and the art was just perfect, so! naturally.)

I sure have! Loki/Clint was actually...I think the first MCU pairing I technically wrote fic for. if not the first then definitely the second. and boy do I still love it.

I did, yeah - but every time I did it I was plagued with massive fits of insecurity and self-doubt, I couldn’t look at a single goddamn picture of myself without feeling like I looked positively repulsive, and ultimately that was what...made it so I don’t wear that particular cosplay anymore. and don’t have any plans to cosplay mcu!Loki in the future, despite the fact that he is kind of...my ultimate fave. 

which is just really upsetting to me.

For a VERY long time it was "Quest for a Maid" by Frances Mary Hendry. Then it turned up on medievalpoc and I was assured that my 6th grade self had not hallucinated it... but sometimes I still wonder.

I love this blend of both “I read this book!” (which, yes, I loved that book and I am glad to find other people who read it, I actually kind of want to reread it now) and also y’all telling me which books you feel this way about. 

...unfortunately I haven’t read any of these which is sad and I wish I could say I had. ALAS.

@nbspaceboy this is actually a talent I’ve kind of developed: taking bare minimum descriptions of books I vaguely remember reading and tracking them down. I was very proud of being able to find The Hounds of Morrigan by way of “that book with the woman in green with the dogs on the cover, some kind of Celtic thing?”

my other one is actually Gwinna by Barbara Helen Berger. until recently I would’ve said The Unicorns of Balinor but then I saw someone reading it on the subway and someone else...I think it was @candiedeyesnow? mentioned it online.
