In short? I hate the guylol

Yeah, I know, I know. “You don’t even really watch the showanymore, Nessa, so how can you hate him? You can’t.” But well... I do.

He is literally the most pointless thingin terms of what he is to Mary. I mean, there is no need for her to besleeping with him (”but she doesn’t need a reason!” - yeah, I’ll get to why I feel like having her sleep with someone really annoys me and shouldn’t be a thing writing-wise just below - you’ll know it when you read it), not to mention that there is no shred of historical accuracyin their relationship. RL Mary never had a fling with a Gideon, or anyone elsein the 4yrs+ between Francis and Darnley. In fact, talk of marriage again wasn’ta thing she was much interested in for a long while, even though politically,she knew she’d have to marry again at some point. During this time, she mainlyasserted her position as Queen of Scotland in her home country and tried torule a nation she barely knew as best as she could. She also spent a load oftime with her ladies-in-waiting (loool). ALSO, have the writers never heard ofboundaries? Why is she sleeping with ANYONE who was sent byElizabeth? “But he was being blackmailed by Elizabeth, Nessa” - doesn’tmatter. Boundaries. Another thing the writers may nothave heard of, but a person can care for someone else, even ina “romantic” way and still not invite them into bed or give into the feelings. That is areal thing. A queen of a goddamn country should be most aware of shit likethat. Like, are you kidding me? Which also brings to mind; is she not wary offalling pregnant? Jesus Christ. That would not go down well for a royal in thattime.

Of course, I do! I love Mary. But being critical of her stupidchoices does not mean you don’t like her or want her to be happy, for God’ssake. That’s like saying if your parents or siblings or friends - someone whoreally cares about you - disapprove of a choice you make (or even a string of choices over time), that they hate youall of a sudden. No, that’s really not how it works. That’s ridiculous. It’smore complex than that. I also think they had the prime opportunity not just toallow Mary to grieve the man she claimed she’d never love anyone like she didhim, but to also showcase her as truly independent of any man, taking a standon her own for awhile before they brought Darnley along. The few episodeswithout Gideon around, she did quite fine. So, was that so hard? It would’ve been good to see more ofthat, and even beyond (yeah, yeah, there was Bash lol - why was he even stillaround? ugh). But of course not. Why do that when she can just... not be trulysingle for a bit? Also, don’t take this as me slut-shaming her because neither I, nor anyone I know who has side-eyed this stupid relationship, ever carried the notion that she was a “slut” for it. No. Their relationship, taken to the level it has been, literally serves no purpose other than to show a few shots of them gettin’ it on. Which, imho, is really unnecessary? It’s really not gonna go anywhere in the long run. You don’t need to see that or have that happen at all. He should’ve just been the spy/ambassador, and leave it at that.

Speaking of her grief, I feel like how quickly they skimmed over her grief robbed the fans - who as fans of Francis/Mary, stuck it beyond his death - of grieving his departure themselves by throwing all this at Mary and the audience. Love him or hate him, he was a huge part of the show for 2+ years. After all the bullshit of Season 2, you cannot deny that his fanbase was one of the strongest in the show’s (remaining lol) audience. He deserved better than that. This, by no means at all, means that Mary should be mourning him for another 2 seasons. No. What this means is giving her the time to grieve, to get back on her feet, to figure things out politically and focus on her life as a Queen with no partner anymore, journey to Scotland, assert her position in the country she was born in, etc. etc. without having another goddamn dude fall at her feet and her of course giving into it “because comfort”. And of all the people, another goddamn spy. Whatever.

I know a lot of people havedifferent opinions about the guy, and I’m not saying that you’re reasoning forthose opinions are bad or wrong, but the thing is, what is the point of thisrelationship? It’s not gonna go anywhere. It really isn’t. Mary still has twomore husbands to get to. I’m not sure if they’ll bring Rizzio into the mix butif they did, I wouldn’t put it past them to whip up something ridiculous out ofthat relationship, too. But yes, she’s hardly gonna be on her own for a longwhile (because they are certainly not goingto show the four years between France and her second marriage - they’ll eitherhave her marry Darnley years sooner or, and what I think is much more likeliergiven Henry’s goddamn speed growth, they’ll do a time jump next season). Sowhere tf does she even have the time for Gideon? “It’s not a big deal, itwas just a casual thing” Well, yeah, but Gideon seems to be in love with her and she has a “soft spot” for him.Doesn’t seem pretty casual to me.

Ultimately, I’m whatever,because I just dgaf about the show like I used to. The only reason I’ve stillsomewhat kept up with it is because I have friends who do and we talk about it,and I still follow some people who livetweet, recap, etc. (I did also skim through 3.15 and 3.17 because well, I am Frary Trash after all so...). I just really thinkembarking on a Gideon/Mary relationship just... could have been avoided for thereasons above, but mostly, for a chance for Mary to just be a single Queen fora bit and focus on this new hurdle life has thrown her way, a Queen with no partner to truly shoulder the burdens only they can understand as ruling monarchs, and to respectfully and realistically move on from the death of a husband she genuinely loved above any other, before she has to deal with two more marriages.

But yeah... I guess you could say that, imo, she should’ve just shoved him off that cliff side in the finale.
