A Sulzer Class 45 “Peak”, Toton-based 45122, works the 15:18 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street in December 1981. Although the HST was taking over most passenger services, loco haulage survived on regional and cross-country workings until the early 1990s and 2000s.

45122 was withdrawn in April 1987 and cut up seven years later.
