1983 was the fortieth year of Eartha Kitt’s life as a performer, but her career in America had been derailed after she was effectively blacklisted for making anti-war comments during a 1968 White House luncheon. During the seventies, she focused on her international career, eventually making a US comeback on Broadway in 1978, for which she was Tony-nominated. Her recordings, however, which had always been just one element of a multi-faceted career, had fallen by the wayside during this period - I Love Men, the 1984 comeback LP that features ‘Where Is My Man’, was her first in fourteen years.

Best known for torch songs and vocal jazz, on I Love Men, Eartha instead chose to turn to disco. At the helm of the LP was Jacques Morali, producer and songwriter behind the Village People and the Ritchie Family, and his hedonistic, decadent influence was a perfect fit for Eartha’s ultra-camp image. ‘Where Is My Man’, released before the album in 1983, introduced an Eartha who was not reinvented, but updated - the style that had made her one of entertainment’s most thrilling performers had now caught up with the times (well, almost - five years earlier might have been a better time to go disco, but the effort should still be commended).

While later tracks like ‘I Love Men’ and ‘Cha Cha Heels’ would define high camp, ‘Where Is My Man’ is a tiny bit more subdued - yes, the track is gaudy and occasionally silly (“a big cigaaaaaaaaar”), but the skills gained from four decades singing torch songs give the vocal a genuine desire that goes beyond innuendo. The ten minute mix on the CD version of I Love Men just extends the drama and longing, hence its inclusion here - it should be clear that where Eartha is concerned, too much is never enough.
