Kanye West - Runaway (Ft. Pusha T)
This tune is on another world altogether. Ye's a notoriously controversial character due to the molten lava that are his emotions. At any time that volcano can erupt & they can spill over, creating moments of social horror &/or hilarity.
The channelling of that emotional saturation is exactly why this song is so god damn untouchable. The level of honesty Yeezy communicates with the listener is so rare, he's letting out all of these feelings of pain, confusion & anger. Almost like he's lost. Almost like he's helpless. He's saying 'Yeah I know I'm a dick, but there's fuck all I can or will do about it'. The scale of that self-criticism is so vast that you feel that connection with Kanye, you feel that negativity & vulnerability coming his soul.
I love the single, repetitive piano note at the beginning where, from 0:21 to 0:35 (in the video) Ye summons the ballet dancers in a similar vain to the way Batman holds up that flashlight in Batman Begins, summoning the bats in the bat cave. Whether that is conscious symbolism or me just inspecting minute detail too close is unclear, though both are misunderstood geniuses, often made out to be some sort of villain.
Anywho, 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' was, in my opinion, a totally flawless piece of art containing so many tracks of such a high calibre, so many tracks which could've been a 'Classix' choice. This one is something special.
