My first year as a full-time teacher is coming to a fruition. At first, I was a reader. After a couple of years, I became a writer. And then it was only a matter of time- I had to be a teacher. The trinity is complete. I am a reader, writer and teacher. In that order. Here are some of the things I have learnt.

The morning prayer is a wonderful ritual. I love it when all my students of 10th A stand up in the morning. Some do it willingly and with love. And some at the back do it reluctantly. But every one of my students stands up and remembers the purest, most wonderful, and most glorious almighty.

The idea of God for me is- a thing of utmost purity, sanctity, as something that orients our inner compass. When students remember the Lord in the morning, they are all orienting themselves to- like a compass- to work the way God wants them to work.

As an English teacher and a Class-Teacher, I like it when my students read for enjoyment. That’s the whole point, isn’t it? If they now read Vampire novels, one hopes that eventually they’d read Toni Morrison or Charles Dickens in the future. I myself started my reading-journey as a fan of “Harry Potter”. Every morning, in the zero period, I can see some girls reading novels under the desks.

I have learnt that everyone has something special in them. And it is the job of a teacher, and school, to figure out that “something special”. A student who hates Social Studies, might be a natural at badminton. A student who excels at Math, might find English to be challenging. It is okay, I tell my students. It is okay to not be great at everything.

But try to be great at least one thing. Gardening, Mathematics, Robotics, Sports, Art and Craft, Physics, Sociology, English, Skating... the school teaches so much! Just find an activity where you belong. Find something that makes your soul dance... And you’d have found yourself.

I have noted that some students are wonderfully clear, as to what they have to do. A couple of boys in my class are clear as day that they want to be coders. They have certificates, they attend workshops and they drown hours on Google to learn how to code. And then there are some other who are wonderfully at sea. I remember a famous quote by Tolkien- “Not all who wander are lost.”It is okay, I tell my students. Some discover their destiny early, and some take more time. What matters is if you have oriented your inner-self to the higher-goals. What matters is your sincerity, and desire, and intention. Eventually, the fog of the heart would clear you’d have an inner voice which would tell you which path you must travel. Just like Robert Frost’s heart did in “The Road Not Taken”.

A teacher is like a tree. At first, when he is young and inexperienced, he is apprehensive- he is dealing with souls- for god’s sake! He looks left and right, and then with trust in his gut, begins to teach. With every passing year- the roots deepen, and he evolves into a rooted Teacher.He becomes, very slowly, into a sadder but wiser man, in the words of Coleridge. Meanwhile, his own soul- now being attached lovingly and deeply- with the souls of thousands of students- becomes like a very large, magnificent butterfly.

It is with such a hope that I look forward to teaching another batch of students in the year to come. And honestly, I cannot wait to know who would those 30-odd students be.
