Lookbook: Madeline, Wilbur, & Claude Lynch, 1920s

Since it wouldn't be fair to just do one or two of the triplets, this is a three-for-one. The Lynch triplets aged up to teens in the late 1920s. While the three of them, especially Wilbur and Claude, were dressed similarly as children, they've begun to take on their own styles. Madeline is a bit of an odd duck and free spirit, Wilbur enjoys more youthful, casual clothes, and Claude is a bit more conservative and muted in his fashion.

Mr. & Mrs. Claude Lynch 1936

Claude and Marie married in 1936 at Newcrest Church, just as his parents had. Marie even wore Mary's veil, which had been stored away for this purpose. Wilbur was, of course, Claude's best man, and Marie's sister Carrie was her maid of honor.

Winterfest 1926

Winterfest celebrations were held at Andrew's home this year. With everyone present, it was deemed necessary a full family photograph should be taken. Myrtle and Vinnie brought their beaus, Billy and Don Bjergsen with as well.

Claude Lynch

Claude Lynch, a native of Brindleton Bay, was killed in action overseas. He was 32 years old.

Claude was born in 1917, as the second child in a set of triplets, to Andrew and Mary Lynch. He met his wife, the former Miss Marie Munch, while in Granite Falls in the Civilian Conservation Corps. They were married in 1936 and had three children. Claude worked for several years in a Brindleton Bay restaurant. He was enlisted in the military in 1943.

Claude was preceded in death by his mother, brother, Wilbur Lynch, and grandparents. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Stanley and Steven, daughter, Lily, two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Klaasen and Miss Irene Lynch, and his father.

Services will be held at Willow Hill Cemetery.

The eruption of World War Two greatly disrupted life for the Lynch family. Kenneth enlisted in 1941 shortly after the United States entered the conflict, following a nearly 100 year tradition in his family.

Wilbur and Claude had never heard much about their father's experience in World War One, but knew enough that he didn't want the same for them. That changed when Wilbur's partner Isaac was drafted in 1942. Wilbur didn't know what else to do but follow him. Claude, as a father of three, was deferred in the draft for several years. Until 1943, when the draft came for him.

Irene had spent several years as a volunteer nurse and finally got over the queasiness she felt in the hospital. When the war came, and the military called for women to serve as nurses overseas, she signed up to make a difference and see the world.

Claude and Marie moved in with his grandparents, Walter and Harriet, soon after their marriage. Their house was awfully big for just the two of them, and children back in the house would be a welcome addition. Claude and Marie soon filled the old nursery with Stanley, born 1937, and Steven, born 1940.

Claude & Marie in Granite Falls 1934

The boys of Camp Granite Falls were given a few Simoleons a week to use in town, while the rest of their paycheck was sent home. It seemed all the boys looked forward to Saturdays, when they’d drive the 20 miles into town, spend their money on cigarettes, clothes, and recently re-legalized alcohol, then spend the night dancing with the local girls. It was at one of these dances that Claude met Marie Munch – coincidentally a distant cousin of his uncle Lucas. They hit it off immediately, and very quickly, Marie was the only girl Claude would dance with. After going steady for a year, Claude proposed to Marie in 1935, which she accepted.

Camp Granite Falls 1933

While Madeline was busy at college, Wilbur and Claude were still unemployed. Until they heard on the radio that the government was recruiting young, single men for paying jobs planting trees and building campgrounds - the Civilian Conservation Corps. Both boys jumped at the opportunity to have a job, even if it meant hard work and living far from home.
