Hana had spent most of her day walking around the renaissance fair, checking out the different tents and stalls, taking pictures and talking to the locals. This time she enjoyed the event a lot more than the Valentine’s gala, for it felt a lot more relaxed. But suddenly the mood shifted, a whisper went over the crowd, quiet and slowly at first but then louder, stronger. Like a wave rolling onto a beach and breaking.
JC was gone.
Missing. For 48 hours already. At first she could not believe it when an old woman told her that the Boosters were in high alert and people already thought Maddison’s murderer had returned. But then she took her phone out, combing through the bag she was wearing over her dress. She tried to call him. Nothing. She texted him. Nothing. So Hana called again, as the lumb in her throat became bigger and bigger. “Come on JC”, she said to the silence around her, trying to breath slowly and steadily, lest she had a panic attack right in front of all these people. “Come on, JC. You promised, remember?”
We’re going to be okay though. You and me will be just fine, I promise. He had told her as much in the lifeguard tower. It felt like something that had happened ages ago now. How stupid had they been, keeping that secret to themselves? You and me will be just fine.
