HOW I WASH MY BRUSHES I can't stress enough about the importance of clean brushes and I am not only talking about pro makeup artists, but everyone who applies makeup including on themselves. Unclean brushes gather bacteria from your skin which then multiply over several days whilst sitting in your cupboard. If you dip that dirty brush back in your makeup, you then transfer all of it in to the pot. Its now a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive, potentially causing the owner an outbreak. I am often asked how I clean my makeup brushes and the answer is simple - shampoo, antibacterial soap or any other brush cleaning substance. Below I will share my routine of washings my brushes. I do this after every job. This is more applicable for pro’s and those who apply makeup on others. If you are not doing makeup on other people, feel free to simplify this according to your needs. I wash my brushes in several steps. 1 MY SPECIAL MIX WASH First I mix in my special cleaning solution which consists of: 🖌 Tresemme Deep Cleansing Shampoo 70% 🖌 Fairy Liquid 20 % 🖌 Olive oil 10% The reason for this combo is simple. Tresemme shampoo foams up fast and penetrates every bristle of the brush. Fairy strips down any oils or wax. Olive oil helps to remove waterproof makeup and soothes the impact of fairy liquid. I find this mix works well, it strips stubborn makeup very fast. 2 ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP WASH I then wash the brushes for a second time using antibacterial soap, let this soak for 10 minuets. This should kill off any remaining bacteria. Rinse off well. 3 SANITISE THE HANDLES I use biodegradable antibacterial wipes to do so. 4 DRY I then place my brushes on a flat surface or fit them in my fav @sigmabeauty dry’n’shape holder. 5 SPRAY WITH 70% IPA After the brushes are dry I spray them with 70 % IPA before they go back in my belt. NOTE: I also soak lip liners / eyeliners in a 70% IPA solution for 10 minutes to kill off any bacteria. Complicated? I don’t think so, as long I keep my kit clean, it is all worth it!
