My SD is a black Standard Poodle. I keep him shaved as grooming is really difficult for me to do. Well, we just got a surprise heatwave (85 in February) and he's been overheating quite a bit. I know about dipping his paws and making sure he's hydrated. But is there any other tips? Since his coat is so short, is there a jacket I can buy that'll help keep the sun off him and keep him cool? Thanks for your help!
Hi Anon!
When Faith and I used to compete in agility, I’d bring a bag of ice water with a sammy towel inside it. I’d keep the sammy draped over her, and every 15 minutes I’d dunk it in the ice water again. Worked great at trials, but probably not the best for out working as it would slide right off their back lol. Perhaps you could place it under his vest, but you’d have to keep dunking it in water.
The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler is a pretty popular option, but you do have to soak it in ice water every few hours or it will get hot an humid underneath. Ruffwear also offers a 50% discount for all service dog handlers enrolled in their Pro-Purchase program :)
CleanRun offers K9 Cool Coats which don’t have to be soaked in water. They are made of breathable fabric which helps block UV rays. You can soak them in ice water for added cooling effect, but it’s not needed.
I’m sure there are others out there, but those are the main two I’ve heard of! I hope this helps!
