I think Evil Within fandom had a huge problem with Fujoshis. One of the main characters is japanese and he constantly got treated like a frail emotional little flower who constantly needs the other man to save him. While in canon he was a determined hardass who just happened to drop his glasses once. And you won't believe how ugly things got when it turned out he had a wife and child.
Now I’ve never actually been involved with the fandom for Evil Within, but I have watched a playthrough and I think? I have an idea of which character you’re talking about and you’re totally right. I actually took time to look through any fan material of Joseph's wife I could find, either she beat him or he neglected her(and that was somehow suposed to set him up as a good guy?) when she's only ever described as being the one more in control of the house. Also people went into full on denial "Look I know the creator said he's married but I swear he's not".
