(Rurumu and Ja’far are one of my favourite relationships in Sinbad no Bouken, so I’m more than glad to write something about them. Thank you for requesting it and sorry it took me ages to write it. I hope you’ll like it :3)

Ja’far took a small step forward as he held even tighter with both of his hands the small box. The rest of Sindria’s Company had already given the birthday presents to Rurumu and now it was his turn. He wasn’t sure he still wanted to do it, though. After witnessing all the colorful and extravagant presents the others had given her, his present seemed trifle in comparison.

Would she even like it? Or would she laugh it off? Nah, it wasn’t in her kind nature to do that, but perhaps she would say something polite and smile while her eyes would tell a total different story. That would be polite enough for her to do so but Ja’far was feeling nauseous even at the thought of such a scenario playing out.

I should have asked someone’s advice on the subject, Ja’far thought. But now it’s too late.

Well, he had asked Sinbad to help him chose a gift for a “very special woman” but his idiotic friend got the wrong message out of it because he suggested him to buy her sexy lingerie and some other things that made Ja’far’s ears go crimson red even by remembering about them.

Stupid Sinbad! Not every important relationship with women has to be a sexual one! Ja’far ‘s inner self cursed as he was recalling that unfortunate incident.

Perhaps, he should have asked the pink haired princess and her lady servants to give him a suggestion for a successful gift. They didn’t seem to have much in common with Rurumu but all of them belonged to the female sex, a sex that seemed alien to Ja’far.

There was no point of listing the alternative solutions he could have found. It was too late now. Rurumu was in front of him probably expecting her present and he felt like running away. He was always quick; perhaps he could find a way to create enough fuss and then escape from that room that had started giving him claustrophobic feelings.

A hand on his back and a heavy thrust interrupted his inner thoughts.

“Why are you standing still?” Sinbad asked and without waiting for an answer he continued “Rurumu is waiting for you” with that he gave an additional push to Ja’far that almost made him lost his balance and forced him to move further forward.

Ja’far casted a deadly glare towards Sinbad; which the latter missed. That was to be expected, Ja’far knew from looking at the color of his cheeks that he had more than enough drinks already.

Idiotic, drunk good- for- nothing, Sin! I’ll deal with you tomorrow; he promised to himself and then decided to face this situation. Reluctantly, he took a few steps closer to Rurumu.

Rurumu was now looking at him, smiling in a way that Ja’far couldn’t really describe but it made him feel at ease.

“Um..I..you…” he felt like an idiot for muttering his words because that was so unlike him. But the patient look in Rurumu’s eyes made me to continue “This is for you. Happy birthday!” he said in one breath.

“Thank you, Ja’far. You should relax, though. Giving a present to a family member isn’t a reason to get nervous”.

She was right, as she always was, but Ja’far couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous. It was the first time he was offering a present to someone and Rurumu wasn’t just anyone to him. She was the person who could fill the emotional hole he didn’t even know that existed inside him.

Rurumu carefully took the small box from his hands to hers and started to unwrap it. Ja’far watched her nervously, biting his lip in a failed attempt to calm himself down. After a long agonizing moment, the box was finally unwrapped and Rurumu was able to open it. Inside the box laid a single pebble.

It wasn’t a remarkably beautiful one, and neither had it looked unique. It was a rather usual one, in a deep green color that almost looked black from afar. Ja’far had picked it up long ago at his first mission. The dark color of it had caught his eye and the fact that its real color remained hidden had make him to think of himself and how his personality remained hidden from the eyes of the cruel world.

That was probably the reason he picked it up because back then he didn’t cared for pretty things. Even today he didn’t care for unnecessary stuff like that.

“It’s nothing special” he stated. “But it is the only possession I’ve got for a long period of time and I’ve grown fond of it”.

“Is it okay for me to have it, then?” she questioned and she extended her hand towards him as if to give him back her present. Ja’far took another step forward and placed his small hands around her own extended hand, making it close around the pebble. It was a way of showing that he really wanted her to have it.

“There is no other person I would entrust them with such a valued possession of mine” he admitted shyly and looked away as his hands left hers.

He sensed her moving and suddenly strong and warm arms were hugging him.  Rurumu was stocking his hair with one of her hands, while the other was keeping him firmly in her embrace. Ja'far felt so calm while being held like that. It felt like having a home.

“My dear child, my dearest son” she whispered as she leaned forward to place a small kiss on his forehead.

She was his home, a place he could always return to and that wouldn’t change. No matter what the future might bring them
