               benny  hadn’t  thought  twice  about  moving  in  with  tiffany—  knew  he  would  be  on  the  road  most  of  the  time,  so  it  didn’t  matter  who  he  shared  a  roof  with,  but  he  never  expected  to  meet  someone  like  her.  even  when  he  wasn’t  home,  hundreds  of  miles  away,  he  found  his  thoughts  drifting  to  her,  wondering  what  she  might  be  doing,  if  she  was  thinking  of  him,  too.  he  doubted  it,  despite  how  often  they  seem  to  catch  one  another  in  positions  like  this.  “  yeah,  i  remember,  ”  how  could  he  ever  forget  ?  “  guess  we’re  not  real  roommates  if  we  haven’t  seen  each  other  naked  once  or  twice.  ”  smirks,  rubbing  a  hand  against  his  jaw.  “  as  long  as  i  don't  ever  have  to  hear  you  hook  up  with  someone  else  through  these  paper  thin  walls,  then  i  don't  mind.  ”

               drew  had  a  nasty  habit  of  choosing  the  wrong  people,  time  and  time  again,  so  part  of  her  can’t  blame  jarvis  for  doubting  this  barely  month-long  relationship  with  someone  else.  part  of  her  wanted  him  to  believe  it,  though,  so  she  could  put  off  confronting  the  intensity  feelings  for  him  for  a  little  while  longer.  those  feelings  terrified  her,  just  like  his  question  does.  it  couldn’t  be,  could  it  ?  was  he  talking  about  her,  about  them  ?  takes  a  step  back,  gaze  filled  with  doubt.  “  you  don’t  mean  that  —  you’re  just  saying  it  to  piss  me  off,  like  always.  ”  and  it  was  working,  because  all  she  wanted  to  do  right  now  was  kiss  him.  “  what’s  so  fuckin’  funny,  hm  ?  ”  —  “  you  get  off  on  it,  don’t  you  ?  doing  this  to  me  ?  ”  scoff  falls  past  her  lips  as  her  arms  cross  tightly  against  her  chest,  shielding  herself.  “  you  don’t  know  anything  about  what  i  want.  we  had  one  night  together,  jarvis.  one  night,  and  it  wasn’t…  it  was  a  mistake.  you  and  i  would  never  work.  ”

                                      the     fabric     of     the     shirt     went     slack     in     her     grip     ,     the     moment     collapsing     in     on     itself     ⎯⎯⎯     no     tug     of     war     ,     no     argument     to     brace     against     ,     instead     a     complete     lack     of     resistance     that     momentarily     threw     her     off     balance     .     she     hadn't     expected     her     to     give     in     that     easily     ,     and     the     lack     of     fight     took     some     of     the     air     out     of     her     own     .     it     should've     felt     like     a     win     .     it     didn't     .     instead     she     just     felt     ..     small     ,     like     a     scorned     child     failing     at     trying     to     pick     a     fight     .     like     she     wasn't     entirely     sure     what     she     was     trying     to     take     back     in     the     first     place     .     “     thanks     ,     ”     she     mumbled     still     at     her     quick     surrender     ,     the     words     tasting     bitter     on     her     tongue     .     her     gaze     dropped     ,     fixing     on     the     shirt     instead     of     ryleigh     ,     where     she     could     still     pretend     that     this     was     about     something     as     tangible     as     a     freakin'     sleep     shirt     .     the     zipper's     sharp     finality     sat     wrong     in     her     chest     ,     panic     spiking     at     the     thought     of     the     door     closing     behind     ryleigh     one     last     time     .     it     was     there     at     the     very     tip     of     her     tongue     ⎯⎯⎯     don't     go     .     can     we     at     least     talk     ?     do     you     think     we're     making     a     huge     mistake     here     ?     but     the     syllables     refused     to     push     past     her     brims     .     instead     her     eyes     rolled     at     her     comment     ,     putting     up     an     annoyed     front     .     “     where     will     you     even     be     staying     ?     in     case     there's     like     ..     mail     and     shit     .     ”

                                      his     gaze     didn't     follow     in     the     direction     of     where     she     pointed     .     instead     his     eyes     stayed     on     her     ,     his     attention     unwavering     despite     the     busy     hum     of     people     buzzing     around     them     .     his     head     tilted     with     just     the     slightest     movement     ,     eyes     narrowing     just     enough     to     study     her     properly     ,     attention     tracking     every     flicker     of     emotion     ghosting     over     her     features     ;     the     way     irritation     had     seeped     into     her     shoulders     ,     how     she     tried     to     physically     rub     the     annoyance     from     her     mind     .     “     not     a     good     idea     ?     ”     he     echoed     ,     poking     at     the     source     of     her     frustrations     as     a     brow     arched     curiously     .     something     ugly     and     satisfied     curled     warm     in     his     chest     .     “     i     mean     ,     sure     ,     i'll     admit     she's     a     little     on     the     wild     side     ,     but     it's     nothing     i     can't     handle     ,     ”     he     shrugged     ,     feigning     cluelessness     to     her     motives     .     “     look     ,     i     appreciate     your     concern     or     whatever     this     is     ,     but     it     isn't     really     any     of     your     business     ,     is     it     ?     i     mean     ,     you     said     it     yourself     ;     i'm     free     to     do     whatever     i     want     ,     so     —     ,     ”     he     tried     suffocating     the     uncomfortable     emotion     threatening     to     surface     at     the     thought     of     her     truly     being     that     cold     ,     that     unaffected     ,     about     his     encounters     ,     “     —     who     i'm     doing     it     with     isn't     anything     for     you     to     worry     about     .     ”
