Here's the Deal on the Meal: Tri-Tip Sandwich with regular French Fries

Introduction

I was introduced to Ranch Hand from a few church friends on a Sunday. It looked much like a small diner, with two TVs on either side of the narrow store featuring sports, the long table-strip iconic to diners, as well as a few tables near the walls and in the outside patio. It has quickly become a favorite for the locals during lunch breaks to order a sandwich and chow down.

Taste

I'm very critical of BBQ joints so for this place to receive a 90 is something commendable in itself. The Tri-Tip Sandwich cuts straight to the point. Fresh baked French roll with slices of their tender tri-tip slathered with their RH BBQ sauce. The roll was standard, nothing too exciting about it, but it held all the meat and sauce in place, something that cannot be looked over. The Tri-Tip is great; super tender so there is no unnecessary ripping of the meat to get your bite. The sauce is probably my favorite part of the sandwich. There are two to choose from, regular or spicy. Spicy tends to have a thicker consistency and more kick; I ended up using the regular. The regular sauce is on the sweet side of BBQ for sure, but it worked perfectly with the sandwich. I made sure to grab a BBQ bottle as I started on the other half of my sandwich. Fries had small cajun seasoning but nothing stood out too much.

Price

$9.95 is reasonable to an extent because it includes the sandwich with a hearty portion of Tri-Tip as well as the serving of fries. Nothing too much to complain about because BBQ usually is a little more expensive as they handcraft their sauce and they have their own smoker for their meats.

Servving Amount

I have to admit that at first I thought the portion was small for the kind of hunger I was packing that day, but Ranch Hand came through. The sandwich was surprisingly dense with tri-tip so that satisfied me. The side of fries definitely helped make me content with the amount of food I was given. If one is truly starving or generally eats more, I suggest sharing another item with a friend.

Variety of Taste

Ranch Hand offers the tri-tip, pulled pork, chicken, ribs, burgers, hot dogs, burritos and even pizzas. As for the Tri-Tip I had, it was fairly one sided, with the BBQ tastes prevalent throughout the roll. That's not too bad as the BBQ sauce was delicious, but not too much other flavor. I mean, it's a BBQ place, what did you expect?

Service

They have a small staff on hand but they are very efficient with their time and efforts. They are quick to deliver or call out food to be picked up and are prompt in their preparation. Ranch Hand does not have waiters or any kind of that service, but we weren't really expecting such service. Overall, they are friendly and are diligent.

Here's the Deal on the Meal: Happy Roll and White Roll

Introduction

Sushi Planet is a small, hidden little restaurant that offers a wide variety sushi for all fish lovers. I have been coming to this restaurant for 2 years now and actually fell in love with sushi at this very restaurant. Sushi Planet does have some size issues as the tables are cramped but the overall feel for the restaurant was great. For the record, I usually order specialty "chef" rolls whenever I venture in sushi places so that is what this review will feature.

Taste

The particular specialty rolls that I ordered were completely different on the spectrum of tastes. The Happy Roll contained spicy tuna, eel and avocado on the top, and eel sauce drizzled over the roll. This roll offered a spicy yet teriyaki-resembling taste along with the fresh crisp of the lightly baked eel. The White Roll, is a deep fried roll with baked albacore and scallops covered with a nice chipotle mayo. In the middle plate features a large helping of spicy tuna.

Price

For the amount and the quality of the sushi served, Sushi Planet's prices are definitely not worth bragging about. The two rolls I ordered were $12 for the Happy Roll and $13 for the White Roll. Little pricey to me, but the prices were not unlike many other sushi restaurants.

Serving Amount

Mediocre. Sushi rolls are generally limited to the 2 piece, 4 piece, 8 piece, 10 piece rule (unless you're in an All You Can Eat establishment) so Sushi Planet fits within those parameters. Again, not great serving size, but also not less than the flatline. Average.

Variety of Taste

Sushi Planet does have a wide variety of tastes in each roll, one of the great attributes of this restaurant. Each roll highlights each individual part of the sushi without diminishing the flavors of other ingredients. For example, the Happy Roll had a nice crispy eel on top, complimented with the soft avocado slice, as well as the spicy tuna paired with the sweet eel sauce glaze.

Service

The waiters are slightly above average in terms of service, as they are prompt with their orders, on top of refills, and are quite capable of offering their own recommendations when waiting on a table that seems to be hesitant on ordering. However, unlike many sushi restaurants/bars, the chefs in the bar also interact with the customers seated in the tables. For instance, I twice witnessed a chef preparing a small fried dessert/appetizer free of charge for a customer whose friends had received their orders but he had not. To me, that's pretty good service.

Here’s the Deal on the Meal: Double-Double w/ grilled onions, and French Fries

Introduction:

Over the years, In-N-Out has amassed a cult-like following on the West Coast with its 4-item menu (not including drinks), signature palm trees in an X shape, and great service. Walking into the restaurant is always very loud, either due to the number of people eating or the open-view of the hectic kitchen. The chain is family-oriented, privately owned, and very inviting to anyone.

Taste

In-N-Out’s burger did not disappoint. The patties are juicy with cheese on both, the lettuce is always extremely fresh and crispy, the grilled onions were caramelized well, and the lightly toasted bun with secret sauce was a great way to hold the burger together. The fries are very good, hand-peeled and cut into their shape in open view to the customers.

Price

A Double-Double with Fries was $5.05. In my opinion, for a burger of this quality (even if fast-food), this is a great price for the meal. A very reasonable price results in a very satisfied customer.

Serving Amount

The picture distorts the size of the burger, which in reality, is small to average sized. That being said, the burger and fries are a very solid meal on their own, but left me wanting more. If you are on the hungrier side or generally eat a lot, order another cheeseburger, it only costs $2.

Variety of Taste

The burger comes with lettuce leafs, onions (grilled on demand), tomatoes, secret sauce, and cheese which all coalesce into a nice medley of flavors. I want to point out that In-N-Out reverses the generic order of items inside the buns by placing the patties on top and extras on the bottom. This is subtle, but adds unique style to their burgers.

Service

The employees at In-N-Out are generally amiable and generous. Wait time is usually around five-ten minutes because of the drive-thru and indoor lines. As a family-owned restaurant chain, I think the owners believe in a personal dining experience, even when ordering food, which is why the drive-thrus at In-N-Out have an employee standing outside, electronic menu in hand, walking to each car door, and taking orders.

As a Californian native, In-N-Out is our pride and joy, so I tried to be as unbiased as possible throughout this review. Although their menu seems very limited, In-N-Out has a secret menu on their website: http://www.in-n-out.com/menu/not-so-secret-menu.aspx. Popular off the secret menu is the signature “Animal Style” which can be applied to both burgers and fries.
