December at the Art Center
It’s mid-December, temperatures are getting cooler, they year is almost over. Our current exhibit is a Nativity Exhibit, with 75 plus nativities. The exhibit will be up until December 28, 2017. We will be Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we will reopen December 26, 2017. We will be closed for Inventory from December 29, 2017 to January 16, 2018. Also, our winter/spring hours go into effect when we reopen in January; those hours are Tuesday thru Saturday 10am to 4:30pm. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Yule, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, and Happy Winter Solstice.
It’s almost Fall
School has started, Labor Day is almost upon us, all signs point to the unofficial end of summer. With Fall in mind, our Fall classes are getting ready to begin. Our first Picasso Diva’s after summer break is on September 7, from 6pm to 8pm. Cost is still just $20, and guys this workshop is not just for the ladies, it’s an adult’s night out. We have Playful Renderings with Sally Grace Branch starting September 10 for a three-week session. You can take one session or all three, the sessions are $25 each or if you opt for all 3, the cost is $65. Ed Bordett will once again be teaching Watercolor starting on September 20, lasting four weeks, the cost is $100. We have a Mat Cutting class in the works, stay tuned for more details on it.
In our gallery, we have two wonderful artists exhibited. In the first half of our gallery we have Virginia Lloyd Davies -- Dreams in Ink. In the second half of the gallery is Parvin Pejman -- Persistence. Both exhibits are up until mid-September when they come down and our Fx2 Regional Photography Exhibit goes up. Following Fx2, is our annual Fall Festival Exhibit.

Picasso Diva’s
PICASSO DIVAS: September7, 6-8 pm! Kyle Keyser, Instructor. It is once again time for an "adult night out" featuring drawing, watercolor painting, drinks and appetizers at the Art Center. Bring your beverage of choice and appetizers you might be willing to share for an evening of instructions. For beginning Picassos and those who just want to chill and have fun. It costs $20 per person and the Art Center provides the supplies. Reservations: 862-4447. Come join Kyle Keyser and his merry band as the get creative with their fun!
WATERCOLOR WITH ED BORDETT
This is a general class for beginning and intermediate watercolor students. It will focus on composition and design as well as leaning wet-in-wet, dry brush, and some experimental skills.
Fincastle artist Ed Bordett is a graduate of the National Academy of Art in New York City and the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Although these days he is best known for his silkscreen and oils, Bordett has never stopped doing watercolors, using them as a preliminary version for other media but also for the sheer pleasure of the medium’s special characteristics. His strong focus on how to organize a picture and his wry sense of humor should keep the class interesting. As he says, “a good time will be had by all!”
The class will run from September 20, 27, October 4 & 11; cost is $100. A materials list will be available at the Center’s front desk. Students should register by September 18, and may pay in person, by mail or on line at [email protected]
Supplies: block of watercolor paper at least 9-12, 11x14; palette (Styrofoam butcher tray will do for first meeting); an HB pencil; kneaded eraser; masking tape; paper towels. Brushes: 1 inch flat wash, 2 rounds (size 6 or 8, and size 12), and a rigger; small sketch book, roll paper towels.
Paints: small (8ml) tubes: one each: Cobalt blue, Prussian blue, cadmium red , alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, ultramarine, sap green. No black or white. Supplies may be found locally at the Art Store (inside CFSOTA), Wal-Mart or at AC Moore or Michaels.

PLAYFUL RENDERINGS with Sally Grace Branch
A non-threatening art experience to jump-start creative play and to see things differently. Perfect for anyone who wants to paint but is a bit shy about it- or for those who want to refresh their skills.
Sally Grace Branch will guide participants through simple and engaging exercises that use various materials to create something from life- plants, flowers, figures, landscapes. Students will use simple materials charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencil or pencil, acrylic and watercolor. Learn how to prepare your surface on which you can create loose studies designed to boost self-confidence and have some fun. Play with simple, basic art materials as you move quickly and confidently from “doodles” to painted and collaged images. You will work with several different art materials over the course of these exercises- find out which you like best!
Please bring a kneaded eraser, soft charcoal, soft pencil (6 B), a ½’ flat brush, medium (#8 or #10) round brush and any of scraps of colored paper for collage, masking tape and a roll of paper towels. If you have a drawing board, please bring it. We’ll provide several smaller sizes working surfaces and the rest. Come amuse and amaze yourself!
Sundays Sept 10, 17, 24, 1-4 pm $25/ session or $65 for all three. Most materials supplied. Please register by September 8.
