Ao que tudo indica, a COP26 foi mesmo um fracasso, pois se os dois países mais populosos do mundo continuarem a queimar carvão (mesmo em menores quantidades), o planeta vai esquentar muito. E as metas “ambiciosas” viraram apenas metas que talvez não sejam cumpridas, e se não forem cumpridas, ao que parece, não vai acontecer nada com o país que descumpriu, ou seja, do que é que vai adiantar?

Apparently, COP26 was a failure, because if the two most populous countries in the world continue to burn coal (even in smaller quantities), the planet will heat up a lot. And the “ambitious” targets have become just targets that may not be acomplished, and if they are not acomplished, it seems, nothing will happen to the country that failed to comply, in other words, what the reason to all of it?

Seastars are the canaries in the coal mine for climate change

At the Bodega Marine Lab, Eric Sanford studies sea stars and mussels to determine how climate change will affect ecosystems along the California coast.

“Our results suggest that if during the summertime there are more warm events, then this can have a really big effect on marine ecosystems.  What we found is that sea stars are actually really sensitive to small changes in temperature, they get really stressed out and they consume fewer mussels and end up growing a lot less.”

Past Antarctic Warming Linked to CO2

The rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) during the last deglaciation some 20,000 to 10,000 years ago was not just a response to warming, reports a new study. Over the past million years, the large continental ice sheets found in current Greenland and Antarctica have formed and melted in response to colder or warmer Antarctic temperatures. These events (known as the glaciation-deglaciation cycle) are evidence of dramatic changes in climate. Read more about this research from the 1 March issue of Science here. Siberian Lake Offers Up Arctic Climate Record

With a sediment core from a lake in northeastern Russia, Martin Melles at the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany, and colleagues have developed a record of Arctic climate that spans the past 2.8 million years. Such high-northern latitudes of the Arctic host an array of complex feedbacks that make it even more difficult than usual to understand how climate works there.
