One of my favorite games is quizzo. I play on Monday nights at a local bar where a friend is the quiz-master. I am borrowing from her quizzo format in this as-yet partiallyy designed quizzo game for my class on pop culture. Below, I present round 1 questions and the general format for the rest of the game, which I will develop soon.
This game is designed for classroom or in-person use (as opposed to solo and online). It works well as a competition between individuals or teams. For a large class, each time might have a representative or two for each round.
Round 1: The history round. (1 point each)
1. Who was the first comic book Superhero, appearing on the cover of Action Comics #1?
2. What war-themed TV drama still holds the title of most highly rated (most watched) series finale in US TV history?
3. The first gay-kiss on television happened in 1991 on what legal drama?
4. According to History Detective Tukufu Zuberi, hip-hop was born in the third year of what decade? (sixties, seventies, eighties, or nineties)
5. Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde are the ghostly villains in what early video game?
6. What famous inventor helped to launch the film industry with his invention of the kinetoscope in 1893?
7. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), a division of the US Department of Defense, invented the internet by using a program called ARPANET to relay messages between scientists in what decade? (sixties, seventies, eighties, or nineties)
8. What country music legend was the first person ever sued by the US government for starting a forest fire, after oil leaking from his camper caught fire? According to his self-titled autobiography, he decided to go finishing and act like he had no idea what happened when the authorities arrived.
9. What film distribution system, that utilizes the internet for distribution, was founded in 1997?
10. What famous rapper appeared in his then-girlfriend Madonna's erotic photography book Sex?
Round 2: The Policy Round (2 points each)
This round will feature questions about federal and industry policies that shape the content of the culture we consume.
Round 3: The Picture Round (3 points each)
This round will ask participants to identify a set of iconic images in pop culture.
Round 4: The Audience Round (4 points each)
For this round, each student will write a question based on the pop culture that they consume. In a large group, teams will select one or two questions to submit. The quizmaster determines what the final 10 questions will be. Presumably, each player/team will get their own question right, but success in the game will require being able to get the other questions right.
An easy prize for the winners is a pop-culture grab bag with bizarre pop culture items from the quiz master's own collection.
