Flatbush Zombies - now, more than ever EP REVIEW

When I think about Vacation In Hell 2 years removed from when it first dropped, I do think that has has some of the best songs that Flatbush Zombies have ever made. I guess I would rank it over 3001: A Laced Odyssey if I had to but my biggest issue with that album was that it was way too long. Even though I do like the album a lot, I think that album could’ve been cut by at least 6 songs. It’s not like there were bad songs, it’s just the album was too long and didn’t need all of them. Since the release of the Beast Coast album last year, I was wondering where Flatbush Zombies would go next. I’m actually really happy that they dropped a 6-track EP instead of another 19-track album. I wasn’t expecting them to drop so soon though after Meechy Darko’s father was shot and killed by Miami Police earlier this year (Rest In Paradise). Given the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless other black lives, the lyrics that Meech has about how “drugs kill, but so do cops, who cares?” are more relevant now, more than ever. On the song quicksand, I don’t think I’ve ever felt the pain in Meech’s voice like this before. It’s an amazing song about how you feel like you’re sinking in your own problems. It’s especially impactful given the recent events in the world and how they align with what happened in Darko’s life. Meechy’s voice is always going to stand out on a song and he’s usually the strongest lyrically but Erick The Architect shined on this EP more than he usually does. I’ve been singing Erick’s praises for every Zombies review I’ve done but his verses on this EP were fantastic and he really made blessings a special song. The hook and the instrumental aren’t as in your face as the other songs on this project but it’s a great change of pace and shows their versatility as well. My favorite track is easily the closer, when i’m gone which is another emotional song that closes the EP on another powerful note. Juice’s verse is fantastic. He talks touches on homelessness, crime and death in New York and he questions if the money that he got on his journey was worth it. Erick and Meech also get introspective on the song as well. I’ve never heard of Sophie Faith before but he feature on the song really tied the song together. Her hook is amazing and I love how her saying “it’s like” is used throughout everyone’s verses as well. This song has the best production on the EP as well. now, more than ever isn’t super emotional the whole time. The EP starts with a two bangers and while the feeling of the EP changes at quicksand, dirty elevator music also goes hard even though it’s more tame compared to herb and iamlegend. The only gripe I have with this project is that I’m not too crazy about the hook on iamlegend but I love how this EP is able to do and say so much in just 6 tracks. Like the title suggests, this EP is definitely necessary to listen to.
