Summary:        

It's 1900, and the world ended thirty years ago, at the hands of one Gray Mann and his army of automatons. When he vanished shortly thereafter, he was presumed dead, and the remnants of humanity continued on in underground cities, such as Teufort, New Mexico. Many born after that day have never even seen the sun.

However, in this thirtieth year, the Administrator is made aware that Gray Mann is still alive, and planning something terrible for this year's Doomsday anniversary. After Sniper fails to deliver his head, she plots to create a new team--one which will surely kill him before he has a chance to unleash his new horrors upon the world.

okay im kinda curious that if all of the mercs would meet each other in the clockwork sunset au or like they all have their own little stories that occasionally they would encounter each for a chitchat?im soooo normal about this au(<- literally obsessed with the au)

they ARE going to all meet up! all three storylines become connected in a few chapters—though a few of the characters unfortunately take a bit of a side seat simply because nine main characters was a bit too much, lol.

pyro, of course, is the ferryman and therefore will show up intermittently whenever someone dies to sort of provide this one-on-one moment with a new dynamic to help the story slow down for a sec during chaos, but he won’t really be part of the group.

and engineer will take a similar role to his one in the comics—being important and involved in the story, but only intersecting with the main team instead of coming with them on their murder quest (because he does have a casino to run). and also other reasons.

and i know you didn’t ask but admin and pauling are also going to come back into the main story in a little bit—there is another side to that very messy breakup that becomes relevant, plus another bonus surprise important character that… i mean, can honestly probably be guessed, there’s only one main character from the tf2 comics that’s missing, huh. i just like to pretend to be secretive

anyway yeah lots of moving pieces and it should all come together neatly! the majority of the story will involve pretty much the entire merc team, all working together for a common goal but for very different reasons and also all having their own little subplots like eyelander, scout’s parents, etc

clockwork au mercs in a nutshell

sniper: exhausted divorcee on a revenge quest getting relationship advice from god

soldier: what if emesis blue had merasmus in it and the entire genre changed

demo: just trying to make it to tomorrow without strangling soldier. but it’s better than sitting around at home

medic: i want to be boyfriends with this hunky mercenary sooooooo bad. also i have a tragic backstory that you can unlock by saying one (1) nice thing to me

heavy: Who Is This Weird Little Man. Why Is He Like This. I Just Want To Pay My Family’s Bills.

scout: the victorian orphan thief stereotype if he was twenty-three and raised by demon nuns

spy: i abandoned my son twenty-three years ago and now he is my business associate and it’s awkward. but only for me because i won’t tell him anything. also a demon for reasons

engineer: would all of you for the love of god stop kidnapping me. just walk in here and talk to me like normal people. or at least don’t use that awful rope that chafes— aaaaaand ive been kidnapped again

pyro: god, but He just wants to play chess with dead people

sorry for answering this like half a year late but i have been deep in a [jazz hands] depressive episode and have not been writing At All BUT i do have the next chapter still like half-written and also a number of plot notes and i do still have an interest in continuing the fic at some point! i am just... not sure exactly when because i'm still struggling to get my writing juices back though i did finally post something yesterday so i'm coming back! i'm coming back.
