Older forms of this character show that it was originally written as a derivative of a "bushy branched tree" (丰). The "bushy tree" was used to "block a road," giving "close off" and, by extension, " closed off area," with "fief" being an associated meaning. Later on 寸 hand/measure was added to show "deliberate action." In its modern form, the left-hand side is written as 圭, a doubling of 土 earth.
