Closed Blinds
When I was a child,
I left my blinds open all the time.
The natural light of day
Streamed through my window
And illuminated
Everything that it touched.
But as I got older,
I closed my blinds more and more.
I shielded myself
From the sun’s glow
And let the shadows
Roam free.
But there are some nights,
When I’m lying under my window,
And through the slits of the blinds,
The moonlight sneaks through,
Caressing my face,
And reminding me it’s still there.
- Light and Dark
Hellraiser, a.k.a., Clive Barker’s Hellraiser (1987)
I am writing to tell you that I opened my blinds today for the first time since you left. My room was dark and cold, and a musty mist had settled in my skin. The sun was no friend: it only served to remind me of the things I once had done with you, things I have had to relearn by myself. But darkness hides the best of hearts; I think you knew that, didn't you? It rained during our last days, more than it had rained in years. I never hated rain until then. Closed blinds do not stop the sun from shining on those who love the light; it traps those inside in their minds, leaves them for dead in a darkened room, as if already prepared for burial. It rained again today. The thunder roared and the lightning soared, and winds howled my name: and I opened my blinds again.
