It was dark. Dark, quiet, peaceful sleep. And then.. It wasn’t. He could hear Ophelia’s voice, Isla’s voice, the professor, and a whole bunch of other people. talking about him. Was this part of being dead? Hearing people speaking of you after? But Opi’s voice whispering “wake up, please” didn’t make sense in that case.
He felt like he was underwater, just below the surface, and couldn’t breakthrough no matter how hard he tried. Wake up, Joey, wake up. Her voice rang in his head. I’m trying. But he couldn’t. He had no control over this. And it was the most frustrating thing in the wold. He couldn’t hear everything, just flashes of their voices. The rest of the time it was like being asleep.
But then he opens his eyes. Opi is in a chair beside him, her head on the bed. He feels his eyes soften. She’s okay. She’s okay. He did it. And he’s.. alive. How is he alive? He reaches out and gently, slowly, strokes her hair. He doesn’t want to wake her, but he has to feel her, to know she’s here, that she’s alive.
