Cine: Closet Monster (2015)

A los nueve años, el pequeño Oscar Madly (Jack Fulton interpreta al personaje en su etapa infantil y Connor Jessup en la adolescente) atraviesa dos situaciones demoledoras, traumáticas: el divorcio de sus padres (Joanne Kelly y Aaron Abrams) y el atestiguar un acto de odio inenarrable hacia un joven gay al que poco le faltó para culminar en tragedia. Al menos tiene a Buffy, un hámster con la voz de Isabella Rosellini y que es, a su vez, su única compañía y una suerte de representación de su ser interno. 

Diez años más tarde, Oscar es un joven que vive con su padre alcohólico y sueña con desarrollar una carrera en el maquillaje para proyectos cinematográficos de fantasía, terror y ciencia ficción. Para sus trabajos recibe la ayuda, a modo de modelo, de su amiga Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf).

Más allá de la escuela, su compleja vida familiar y su sueño, Oscar es empleado en una tienda mayorista de artículos de construcción, adonde conoce a Wilder (Aliocha Schneider), un joven con quien entabla una relación que no puede definir si se trata de amistad o de deseo. El trauma que le generó la visión de ese chico que ha quedado parapléjico por un violento grupo de adolescentes  aparecerá para replantearse sus propios miedos e incluso su sexualidad.

Escrita y dirigida por Stephen Dunn, esta producción canadiense se ha erigido por derecho propio como una de esas pequeñas joyas del subgénero “coming of age” que nos ha regalado la segunda década del siglo XXI.

Directed & written by Stephen Dunn, CLOSET MONSTER (2015) is a drama, a coming of age story, & psychological horror all mixed together. What's stunning is that, coming from Newfoundland, I know the true story that partly inspired bits of the movie's screenplay. Dunn grew up around the same time as me, & everybody heard about the young gay man who was viciously attacked in a cemetery, sodomised with a tree branch, then wound up paralysed from the waist down. It was a tragic, brutal moment for the LGBTQ community in this province. I believe the incident happened in the '90s. Dunn weaves the terror of coming out, of figuring out your own sexuality, with this real bit of Newfoundland's past to create an intense, beautiful, & often surreal tale of what it is to discover your identity while living in a small town-type world, regardless if you live in a city or not.
