As someone who’s been a Starkid fan since 2009, I have such strong feelings over a Starship reprise you have no idea
Picture the scene: a fifteen year old musical theatre kid with no musical theatre outlet, forced to attend catholic school with untreated ADHD and completely miserable. Gay, gender unsure, and severely depressed and anxious. My lifeline at that time was team Starkid. I’d watched AVPM around the time it first hit YouTube after hearing about it at my youth theatre (we didn’t do musicals tho :( lord I tried) and snuck downstairs to stay up all night watching AVPS being uploaded one video at a time on our shitty internet. I found my community amongst the fans, yet had no one in my “real life” to talk about it with.
It was everything to me. To say they saved me was an understatement.
Once again, I stay up all night to watch Starship premier on YouTube and… holy shit. It felt like it was about me. I was Bug. I too spent my days obsessing over videos of another life in another world, dreaming of nothing else but escaping this hell I was stuck in and joining my heroes out there, far away from here. In the same way Bug wanted to be a Starship ranger, I wanted to be in Starkid. Yeah, there were a few things I was that they weren’t, like British and 15 with no musical talent, but I simply couldn’t let that dream go. When Bug said “I’d rather be dead than to live in this place” I felt that so hard about my current life.
The dream didn’t exactly go anywhere. No one supported my dream of being an actor, I had no opportunities to follow it anyway, and my mental health was only getting worse. But Starkid kept me alive - maybe I’d never join them, but I’d always have them with me. They’d never know me, but I knew them, and that was enough.
I’m still a huge fan, all these years later. I love pretty much everything they’d ever made. I can’t decide if I prefer the Hatchetfield anthology over the parodies over the original shows because they all embody a piece of my heart at a different time in my life. When I watched Joey and Lauren perform Granger Danger during Starkid, Innit I had this insane moment where my adult self and my teenage self came together, and… holy shit, I can’t even word it but I started crying.
Now, I’m in my thirties, I’m married, and I’m still pursuing my dream of being an author. That’s right, ya boy has two dreams. But without Starkid leading me to the rest of the internet, to Tumblr and fandom to fanfiction etc, I probably wouldn’t have found my love of writing. They taught me what it was to find passion, community, fun. I owe them everything.
To see Starship remounted, with their evolved budgets, skills, vocals, etc would be so incredible. How dang poetic to see how this show could grow and evolve the way they’ve grown and evolved, the way I’ve grown and evolved thanks to them.
If it doesn’t happen, well, that’s okay too. Whatever they make next I’ll be excited to see it. I hope they’ll be around forever, giving kids and adults like me the escape and the spark that I would have died without.
