Having read yet another comment from a fanfic writer who lost months of progress on a fic when their computer bricked itself, I feel compelled to post this very shouty PSA:

IF YOU CARE ENOUGH ABOUT A THING TO BE WORKING ON IT FOR HOURS AND DAYS AND WEEKS AND MONTHS, DEAR GODS, BACK IT THE FUCK UP ON AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE OR IN AN ONLINE STORAGE LOCATION LIKE ICLOUD OR DROPBOX OR GOOGLE DRIVE OR WITH A DEDICATED CLOUD BACKUP SERVICE LIKE IDRIVE OR BACKBLAZE, BUT FOR GODS SAKE ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE UP-TO-DATE BACKUP OF YOUR IN-PROGRESS WORK SOMEWHERE THAT IS NOT THE DEVICE YOU ARE WRITING ON!

Flash drives / thumb drive are cheap as dirt and it takes like 30 seconds to plug one in, copy your file, eject it again, and then put that thumb drive somewhere safe. Hell, if you're really fucking broke, just email the file to yourself. But FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS AO3...

BACK. UP. YOUR. FIC.

MAKE IT A HABIT: SAVE > BACK UP > REPEAT.

You'll thank yourself for that habit when your laptop gets a drink spilled on it or gets knocked off a bar-height countertop onto your tile floor or installs the latest Windows update and turns itself into a paperweight.

Backing up your fic should be part of your save process every time you finish writing for the day. That way, if something happens, you haven't lost more than a day of progress.

#ok i need to vent about medibang #as i was uploading a procreate piece to it (its how i transfer procreate files to my windows pc since i cant airdrop it)#the program has been updated so they limited the in-program cloud storage #for context the cloud storage for the longest time used to be UNLIMITED #and now with the establishment of the premium subscription service #the free version's cloud storage limit has been reduced to THREE GIGABYTES #THREE #i couldnt even access the cloud files bc i had 8gb #it didnt even give me a notification telling me i exceeded the sudden new limit #WHICH BEFOREHAND THERE WAS NO SUCH STORAGE LIMIT #and the only way to get a free trial of the premium service was through my ipad #if you try it on desktop you have to pay for a YEAR #this free trial is for 2 months #and only available through mobile devices #i am. so mad. and currently downloading 5 years of files onto my computer even if i have the newer ones already #ngl this might put me off medibang forever #unless i go and delete the procreate file from the cloud every time i transfer #which is a pain but man.#MAN.........#who gives a hoot

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

content moderation for platforms like facebook and tiktok employs thousands of people, sometimes in the usa but more commonly in the global south (so they can be paid less) to sit at computers and view hundreds of flagged posts a day, including graphic violence and csem, for awful wages, under ridiculously stringent conditions. this results in many, many of the people who work in this field developing PTSD -- and of course they are not given adequate treatment of support, one article cites facebook giving its moderaties nine minutes of 'wellness time' for employees to recover if they see something traumatic.

here's some articles on the topic that can give you a good overview of what working conditions in this field are like, but warning, there's pretty graphic descriptions of violence, animal abuse, and child sexual abuse in these articles, as well as frank discussion of suicidal ideation:

i have a genuine question about AI and it's effect on the environment! i see people talking about how rough it is and the water it wastes and personally i've only found mixed sources on that fact. do you have anything solid on what exactly that impact is? thanks and have a good one and sorry if you've answered this before!

hi there! unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the water usage of ai, especially because one of the most startling sources was a misprint due to a mistranslated unit of measurement. for those who don't have/want to have a twitter:

essentially, this source was off by a factor of 1,000. putting this in simpler terms, and to quote andy masley, "Empire of AI asserts that a data center is using 1000x as much water as a city. In reality, it's 22% of the city's water."

andy masley has done a vast amount of research on ai's environmental impact, so if you'd like compiled resources, i would absolutely suggest looking over his various posts on the matter:

also, while it's from 2024, GiovanH's Is AI Eating All the Energy? is very comprehensive in its research!

and while it wasn't your question... it's also important to mention that, when talking about AI's water usage, a lot of people decide that the solution is to get rid of data centers altogether, or that any water usage by data centers is "too much".

this is a bad idea and a very bad argument, largely because data centers are where the modern internet lives! they hold the infrastructure that allows for cloud storage, web hosting, scientific computation (i.e. weather and climate science), public infrastructure (i.e. government services and utilities), and more! by arguing "ai sucks, we need to get rid of data centers", people are essentially saying "i don't actually understand what's happening, i just want to say what feels good."

do you remember what happened when cloudstrike pushed a faulty update in 2024? airlines were grounded. hospitals lost access to patient records—banks, newsrooms, emergency services, and government offices all went dark at once! microsoft azure, the computing cloud service used by many, MANY federal and state organizations in the US, occupies over 400 data centers, and each and every single virtual machine affected by this update went down.

do you see what i mean? modern society relies on centralized digital infrastructure. talk about how data centers can make their water usage more efficient or how they can do the same for energy, but please don't let people act like data centers can just poof into thin air and not cause any problems!

🚨Meet Charles Barton “Bart” Lucas, 59 — registered Republican, VP at RoMac Building Supply, and self-described youth mentor who boasted of running a home Bible study group for over 12 years, welcoming around 200 young people through his home.

He also served as an “Overseer” at Heritage Community Church in Fruitland Park, FL — a role the church describes as providing “spiritual oversight, direction, and leadership.”

Lucas was just arrested on FIVE counts of video voyeurism after his employer’s IT team discovered disturbing material on his work computer and cloud storage. Investigators found videos of adolescent girls and adult women — taken with a hidden camera installed in a church bathroom and a room where girls changed after baptism services.

Voter records indicate Lucas is a registered Republican — making him the usual suspect in cases like these.

RoMac stated: “The material was discovered by our team during a routine company process and was immediately reported to law enforcement… Mr. Lucas is no longer employed by RoMac.”

Lucas was released from Lake County Jail on just a $25,000 bond.

These are the people screaming about “protecting” girls and women from a non-existent “threat” of trans women in bathrooms.
