yo in my late night tumblr roaming i ended up reading the in-tag commentary in your damar tag and it is a+++ people are way too lenient with damar and he's way more interesting when the nasty stuff isn't ignored
(DS9 SPOILERS) Yay, I’m glad you agree! Thank you for reading my tags and commentary lol. I can understand not wanting Ziyal to die for her sake, an example of a female character who indeed got killed for male development. But Damar was very, well, Cardassian. He believed in the racism, genocide, colonialism, justice system, etc. Even if he hadn’t murdered an innocent girl (whom he considered a traitor and a burden), he was still very authoritarian and racist. And we don’t even know what he was up to during the occupation. Nothing good, I can imagine. I don’t think Dukat’s bad behavior influenced him as much as his dedication to Dukat and his people.
That makes his change all the more astonishing, particularly since it was done in such a believable way. Unlike Dukat who wanted the best for himself, he wanted the best for Cardassia. Through that, he realized that there might be a better way forward for everyone, one that was not so harmful to his own people as well as others. Ironically, Dukat helped inspire him to become a great leader and make this radical decision. I don’t think the horrible Dukat and the less horrible Damar parted on bad terms. It was such a wonderful example of how unexpected and morally complicated history, politics, and personal relations can be.
