Do we really need a Single IoT API company?
So here’s a couple of companies / rebrands / pivots that I’ve noticed recently. I know it’s a pain in the ass to to integrate to a new API, but consider:
how many APIs are you going to be integrating to anyway?
how much developer work is to integrate to any one API?
what’s the danger of a single point of failure?
how many 9s of reliability are they promising?
what’s the odds of any of these companies going out of business - or “pivoting” in the next few years? are you betting your company they won’t?
Note that this doesn’t distract from integration services like Mandrill or Twilio where what they’re providing APIs to are inherently really difficult integrations.
Jilia, which when we last wrote about it was a Raspberry Pi shield and a failed Kickstarter, has now rebranded itself as “Jilia is a cloud-based platform and API framework that empowers developers to imagine, build, and expand the Internet of Things with a single, simple API framework”.
CloudRail, “enables software developers to integrate everything via one single API. Integration of cloud services and smart devices is now fast and easy”.
This is “on the other hand”. Temboo: is now the “IoT Software Stack”. I seem to remember that when I first bought my Arduino Yún this was something like a single point API company with a strong emphasis on small board connectivity.
