10 Best Austen or Austen-Inspired Films
10. Mansfield Park (1999)
This movie is a bit more gritty than the usual Austen fare, but I do love me some Jonny Lee Miller. And Mansfield Park was my favorite book growing up.
9. Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
This is a nice little where are they now miniseries. And where they are is knee deep in a murder mystery.
8. Bride & Prejudice (2004)
This one is just pure fun. Love the inspiration from Bollywood.
7. Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (2016)
A year ago I would have never dreamed of even considering watching this movie. A fan of horror, I am not. But then, I had a lot of free time and I thought what the hay? And it was so funny, crazy, and zany, that it’s now on my favorites list. Matt Smith’s Mr. Collins is the best Mr. Collins.
6. Sense and Sensibility (1995)
Although I find other adaptations of this book to be far more romantic, the sibling scenes were on point in this adaptation. Oh, and the cinematography and music were gorgeous.
5. Clueless (1995)
So I didn’t know until I was an adult that this was an adaptation of Emma. And it’s such a well done one too. It’s 1990s iconic. So many quotable lines. And a dreamy Paul Rudd to boot.
4. Emma (2009)
So I’m a total Emma fiend. It’s not my favorite book but most of my favorite movies are of the Emma persuasion. I love this version because the scene where Mr. Knightley chews out Emma is chef’s kiss perfection.
3. Sense and Sensibility (2008)
If it’s a long a** miniseries, sign me up. I love all the details. All the quiet pauses. All the world building. Sense and Sensibility has such a great plot and does a great job of showing the differences between the two sisters. I also liked how the actress who played Marianne was a bit older. I love Alan Rickman but it was a little ick to watch him romance 19-year-old Kate Winslet.
2. Emma (2020)
To be honest, this one threw me for a loop. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. And it took me some time to appreciate it too. Like I wasn’t a 100% sold the first 15 minutes. But as I kept watching and drinking in the visual beauty I steadily grew to love it more and more. The thing I love most is the romance. We SEE how Emma and Mr. Knightley’s feelings change for each other and I absolutely eat up every second of it. The one flaw that keeps this usurping my beloved P&P was the nosebleed scene. It added nothing and hindered the romantic mood.
1. Pride and Prejudice (1995)
This is where it all began. This is the movie that turned me from casual fan to obsessed superfan.
If you love to see what you read, then this adaptation is for you. It’s a beautiful visualization of the book. They take few liberties with the original text (why would they when it’s so good on its own?). And on top of that, we get Colin Fricking Firth. Hello! Jackpot!
