Do you have any advice for writing ballads/rhyme based poetry? I'm doing a mini cipher hunt for my sister and am struggling with the clues. Thank you!
Oh man! That sounds like a lot of fun; I hope your sister enjoys it!
So the Cipher Hunt clues are all in iambic tetrameter, which is a fun, casual meter. I have a weirdly intuitive understanding of meter, so I can usually *feel* what’s right rather than thinking about it consciously. Read through all the old clues to get the meter in your head. It feels like duh-DUH duh-DUH duh-DUH duh-DUH. It’s most important is that you have the stressed syllables in the right places, especially the final syllable of the line.
For rhymes, I like to write out the alphabet at the bottom of a piece of paper and cycle through all the sounds when I get stuck. You can also use a rhyming dictionary (RhymeZone is a good one) so long as you realize that some of the options it gives you are not actual rhymes. Use it for inspiration, but take everything it says with a grain of salt.
For things like this, don’t worry about using common/cliche rhymes. If you get stuck, try to think of a new way of phrasing the clue so you have a different word to rhyme on. There’s always more ways to say things than you expect! Especially if you haven’t written much poetry before, I recommend writing your first draft longhand. If you think of a line that might work, write it down! Don’t be afraid to come up with a lot of options and make a bit of a mess.
Also! This goes for anyone--if you get stuck on a poem/clue/whatever that you’ve written, I am happy to provide help and feedback! Just message me off anon!
