pics that make you go hmmm
Ever since Clyde joined the Reaper Pirates, he never felt the need to seek out information on his past life. After all, what was in the past must stay in the past. With the exception of himself, of course. But the glaring werewolf in front of him is making him wish he had some sort of clue as to how he pissed him off. Gabriel was his name, if he was correct.
“What did you do to him, Clyde?” Anaya mumbled next to him at the bar with Nadia also leaning over his other ear.
“Did you fucking kill his pack or something?” Nadia asked and tightened her lips when Gabriel snarled over at her.
“Presumptuous bitch, I don’t even have a-”
“Hey,” Clyde snapped while standing up, interrupting whatever more insults were going to be thrown her way with Naseem following suit. Gabriel stood up to face Clyde face to face, nose to nose. However, as he predicted, Clyde towered over him and Gabriel realized it very quickly too as his ears dropped down. If Clyde had to guess, he was around 5’11 or so compared to his own 6’5. But he had more muscle compared to himself.
“What is it, doc? Mad over a few little mean words?” Gabe sneered in a mocking voice, claws coming out as they came ever so close to his jugular.
“Say whatever you want about me. But keep your mouth shut about my crew,” Clyde said monotonously, his own hands wrapping them around Gabriel’s neck. He didn’t understand this bubbling rage that started even before Gabriel insulted Nadia. His whole body tensed even just looking at him, the glaring gray eyes not helping his tension in any possible way.
Gabriel growled once again, retracting his claws and bringing both of his hands to his side. As Clyde watched him relax, he let go of his neck and as his hands released, he felt an air shift with all of his crew. Each of them waited for Gabriel to make one wrong move. He scoffed at each one of them and dusted off his jacket with gritted fangs.
“That was always the one thing I admired about you, Clyde. You were stupidly loyal.”
The last thing Clyde remembered was silence. An empty white noise rang all in his head, the most peace he could ever remember experiencing. It was like an eternal sleep, but without the dreadful part of waking up to live. There was no pain that he ever experienced, something he doesn’t even remember the feeling of. Just empty. Couldn’t ask for anything better.
He was at peace.
One day, it was all snatched away from him. Clyde awoke with a gasp, suddenly aware of his very physical surroundings and clawed his way out. Dirt, there was dirt all around him. He clawed through the ground with a strength he never remembered having and with a pop of his head, Clyde took his very first gasp of air. With a final push, Clyde pushed himself out of the tiny hole and climbed out into the new world around him. He squinted his eyes, adjusting to the surroundings all around him. Nothing…not a single thing that could make him remember something. Anything.
“Maybe it is a blessing that I know nothing,” Clyde mumbled to himself, staring all around his surroundings. His eyes landed on a stone above the hole he crawled out of and he squinted at the engraving on it. Clyde, which was his name, and his last name that seemed to have faded over a period of time. Right below his name was an engraving of Here lies The Doctor. Rest In Peace. How long has he been dead?
Clyde frowned at an aching feeling in his chest, a sadness draping over him that he couldn’t understand. Despite this sorrow, he didn’t know what he was sad for. Was it homesickness? Longing for another? It was an unfortunate predicament that he could only remember his first name and the deep sadness that he carried on his back like a satchel. But he couldn’t just stand here, he needed to find some answer. Some sort of solution out of this predicament.
He stepped through the graveyard, a wave of familiarity washing over him as he moved through the gravestones. The despair began to move aside for the comfort, but never going away. This must indicate something, he supposed. In the air, he heard faint whispers but as Clyde looked around, there was nobody around him. But there were still stares that he felt in the back of his head, something that was watching him. There was something giddy in the glance, like the invisible figure was waiting on him to open a present.
Three taps were felt on his shoulder and Clyde turned around then looked down at a little girl looking up at him with the biggest gray eyes he’s ever seen. He didn’t want to question if they were real, not when she was looking up at him with the sweetest smile. His eyes began to water at the sight, his heart tugging on having a child look up at him with so much wonder.
“Thank you, Doctor. You made my passing less scary,” she said up to him and wrapped her arms around his legs. Despite the ugly all white suit that he was wearing, her cold arms traveled through the thick material of the suit. A shiver ran up his back at the cold and rubbed her cold back. His hand moved to rub the back of her blonde-white hair, his heart warming at her words.
“I am happy you’re at peace because of me,” Clyde told her thoughtfully, not a single thought as to what he did to help her death be less scary. He supposed that’s what he did as a doctor. She looked up at him, never moving from his legs for a few minutes. The little girl stepped away, her smile up at him never fading.
“I know you may not remember,” she told him, catching him off guard with her observance. “Just enjoy this new life, please?”
Clyde kneeled down in front of her, taking her small cold hand in his own. He looked her dead in the eye, another wave of familiarity hitting him as if he did this before.
“I promise.”
The girl smiled up at him and before his very eyes, she faded away like she was never there. Clyde wasn’t sure if he could call this the strangest thing he’s had happen to him. He didn’t think coming back to life could necessarily be beaten by anything else. But there was a curious part of him that wondered. That longed. How much has the world changed, even with what little he remembered?
What kind of people were out there in this new world and new life of his? Clyde began his walk through the graveyard yet again, but now he steps closer to an arch. He deduced that it must have been the entrance to the graveyard. His first step out would be his first step to a new life, a chance to do things right in this second life. Maybe even find a clue to what he was like before.
Clyde took a deep breath and stepped right into this brand new world.
Before Nami lost consciousness, the last thing she felt was soft fur pressing against her cheek. The smell of woods and cinnamon filled her nose so her descent down at least had a pleasant descent. It was all black for a while, a peaceful exchange from all the fighting that just occurred.
Some time later, Nami woke up in what she thought was Chopper’s office but the aura around her was different. And the doctor in front of her was four feet too tall to be Chopper. He was seemingly too human, too, having white gray skin with stitches sprinkled across his body. Maybe human wasn’t the right word to describe this guy seemingly concentrated in writing something down on a clipboard. The zombie-doctor looked up from his writing and a smile spread across his face.
“Oh Nami, I’m glad that you’re awake,” he said to her, walking his clipboard back to a desk. He looked back at her wide brown eyes who he figured was making sense of what happened to her. “I’m Clyde, I’m the Reaper Pirates’ doctor.”
Nami opened her mouth to ask more questions but her breath was caught in her throat when a pretty lion woman poked her head into the office. Etsuko Fujiwara, Nami reminded herself with a flush face. Clyde looked back at her and shot her a thumbs up. Etsuko breathed a sigh of relief before walking into the office. Her thick silver and black hair-mane?-was tied to a ponytail to keep it out of her face and her brown black eyes were staring into hers. Nami leaned her head back and she looked up at the ceiling.
“That marine got you and your sniper pretty good. I’m glad you’re alright though,” Etsuko told her while she pulled a chair for her to sit backwards in. She rested her elbow on the backseat of the chair. Even with the fur, Nami could see the solid muscle that Etsuko had. Similar to Luffy, she was deceptively strong to her opponents. Her face flushed as she realized how long she’s been staring at Etsuko and she cleared her throat.
“Yeah, they did. Also, where’s everyone?”
“The little reindeer’s beds got filled up quick so I took care of some of our people plus your people,” Clyde explained and Nami realized how she took the hardest of some of the hits. She nodded and the three of them sat in silence for a while. They were definitely a different pair from her captain and doctor–the two of them were more reserved and quiet, seemingly pretty thorough. Nami looked down at her hand to find some wrapping on her hand.
“Hey Captain, I’m going to go to the Sunny to check on our people. Can you stay with Nami?” Clyde asked Etsuko and she nodded with a hum of approval. “Let Etsuko know if you have any other symptoms. I won’t be long.”
“Alright,” Nami said before she watched Clyde speed walk out of the office. Or maybe his long legs made his movements look faster than they actually were. She looked over at Etsuko who was staring at her with an undetectable look on her face. Was it something of interest? Concern? Is Nami reading too much into a stare? Probably.
“You had a bad cut on your shoulder and blood loss. Clyde wants to check for a concussion soon,” Etsuko told her, leaning her head to the side to stare right into her. “Trying to make sure you don’t fall asleep. I’ve heard of people who died from that.”
Etsuko grimaced when she watched Nami’s eyes widened at that and she leaned up with a slight wince at the pain that shot throughout part of her body. “Fuck,” Nami hissed, feeling Etsuko come closer to her “I think I need to rest more.”
“Yeah,” Etsuko confirmed and the two of them sat in a warm silence before she leaned over to fluff her pillow. That same woodsy, cinnamon scent fills Nami’s nose with sweat underneath it. Nami shifted a little more until her head was at a more comfortable angle.
“Thank you,” Nami said to her and Etsuko nodded, looking towards the window near her bed. She followed her glance to stare out at the night sky that seemingly had sprinkled stars across it. Wow, she was out for a long time. A dark purple-blue was painted across the sky, a sight that Nami wished she could sit outside for. The two of them sat in silence for a while and Clyde came back in with only an indicator of a throat clearing noise.
Fast and quiet, this guy was freaky.
“All of our crew that are resting on the Sunny are okay. Those that took more damage than the others-”
“Nadia and Anaya?” Etsuko interrupted, this being a common routine apparently with these two. Clyde nodded and Nami didn’t miss her eyes softening at the mention of Anaya. A bubble of jealousy formed at the bottom of her stomach and she had to shake her head at the feeling.
“Yes, Nadia and Anaya,” Clyde confirmed monotonously and he went into more explanations about the Reaper Pirates’ conditions in terms that she couldn’t understand. She wasn’t trying to tune him out, not really. His white-gray eyes bounced over to her and Nami had to make some sort of face to convince that she was listening.
“Did you have any other symptoms? Any pain?” Clyde asked her and began to grab some tools to seemingly check for a concussion.
“No, except for some pain when I tried to shift a certain way,” Nami explained to him and Clyde nodded as he asked her more questions. He began to feel her face and as expected, his touch was cold. A ‘just rubbed my fingers on ice cubes’ type of cold. It was refreshing.
Nami answered each one of his questions but out of the corner of her eye, Etsuko was watching her with that same intense look. Clyde stepped away and he nodded as he took in all of the information that he was provided.
“So Nami, you don’t have a concussion which is good news. Bad news, due to your foot breaking the way it did along with the sprains, you will have to rest in here,” Clyde explained to her and he began to walk towards their closet to grab what looked like a thick blanket to her. As he came closer, a small smile spread as she saw what was covered on it.
“Your captain said that you liked tangerines,” Etsuko cut in to mention and Clyde nodded in confirmation.
“Mhm. Thought you might appreciate it,” Clyde said with a smile. Nami’s heart swelled at the gesture and before she could move to take the blanket, Clyde began tucking her in. “Don’t move if you don’t have to. We also have a bathroom that’s right across from here.”
“Thank you,” Nami told him and she cuddled into the soft material of the tangerine blanket.
“Would you like Mr. Bubbles?”
“Who?”
Clyde walked back over to shuffle through something to bring out a brown stuffed bear that had stitched up legs and arms. “Whenever any of our crew has broken and sprained anything, I like to give them Mr. Bubbles. Especially if they have to be by themselves,” Clyde explained to her. Nami took the bear into her hands and smiled at it.
Mr. Bubbles had a silly charm to him, she had to admit. He was kept groomed as the lemon scented smell would indicate. He had a sticker that was placed on his left cheek, like he was a little kid getting out of the doctor’s. Nami never really had a stuffed animal growing up, she supposed it was never too late to see what she missed out on.
“Thank you,” Nami smiled up at him and Clyde nodded with a mirrored smile. He rubbed the middle of her back as she held onto Mr. Bubbles.
“Hey, Clyde, you head into the bunks man. I’ll stay with Nami and let you know if anything happens,” Etsuko told him and Clyde nodded as he began his walk back to the bunks. She took her spot on one of the nearby beds and kicked her feet up so they overlapped each other.
“I’ll be fine, you don’t have to watch me,” Nami explained and Etsuko brushed her off with a shake of her head.
“I got watch soon anyway, it’s alright. I wanna make sure you head to sleep okay.”
Nami’s face flushed at the sentiment and she nodded, holding Mr. Bubbles with one arm while she brought the blanket closer to her. Her eyes got heavier as the sound of waves and Etsuko’s presence lured her to sleep. A recap of the day flashed her mind and a shiver ran through her body as she remembered the point of impact of her injuries. The same woodsy, cinnamon scent filled her nose as fingers ran through her hair.
“You’re okay, Nami, nothing is going to get you. I won’t let them. Sweet dreams.”
