in a demon-hunting world, what role would you play?
Grumpy bookish witch in a leather jacket, part of a team of demon hunters, maybe. I’d find the demons for them and get them out of trouble when they’re overwhelmed, bring them to my place and later complain that they’ve raided the kitchen while I was busy doing a blood magic ritual or cursing someone’s family in the library . Something like that. I’d like to pull off the motorcycle thing, but the truth is I can’t drive a motorcycle and I’d probably be too scared anyway.
weapon(s) of choice?
Magic; if not available, daggers or a gun. The Glare.
best song to fight evil to?
It’s so hard to choose! ‘Crown on the Ground’ by Sleigh Bells is on repeat 24/7, though, and ‘Gunpowder and Lead’ by Miranda Lambert might be my all-time-favourite. And the ever-overexposed ‘Seven Devils’ by Florence & the Machine if I’m indulging in my evil side.
what kind of demon would you be most excited to fight?
The kind that try to win an argument while they’re being eradicated from this universe.
what fictional girl fighting evil would you like to have at your side?
Ach, this is even harder! But I think anything’s possible when you have Frankie Landau-Banks as your accomplice.
what kind of outfit would you feel most powerful in?
Leather boots, leather jacket, red lipstick. Sunglasses after long nights.
do you think you could ever help evil instead of fight it?
Not if it’s not necessary. But I’d be willing to go pretty far in that direction if I have to protect people I love. Or to get vengeance on someone.
is there a real world girl fighting evil that you particularly admire?
I couldn’t make up my mind about this question for a long time because there are so many girls and women fighting evil that are worth admiring and that have influenced me so much in my life. But in the end I decided to go with Sybille Ortman, who was a jewish girl and lived during the second world war. Shortly before the persecution and genocide of jews started, she was sent to live in London by her mother and never returned to Germany, but spent the entire time span of the Nazi regime in the US, trying to help her friends, family and other people in need leave the country. Her fate is one among the millions of fates and lives destroyed in the second world war, and even though their sacrifice and suffering was so great history often has no space for them. I was asked to read parts of her letters to her mother (who remained in Germany for a great part of the war) at a memorial event last year. All her letters to her mother (and vice versa) and an extensive biography have been compiled by her grandson Peter Crane and published as a 1000+ pages book which I can only recommend.
is there anything you do (or plan to do) in real life to fight evil?
Apart from voluntary work, I think the way I can fight evil best is to fight the small evils in daily life, to not tolerate injustice when it happens right in front of me, no matter how small it seems, to use my privilege to help others, and to try to convince others to do the same.
