“I have to go, actually,” he says finally, though the expression on Mike’s face plainly tells him he knows he’s lying, and had expected the response before it came. “Like, now. Preferably.”
“Oh,” Mike says, decidedly disappointed but not exactly surprised as Will tosses a twenty onto the bar and hops out of his seat in one fluid motion. “Oh, well- wait, Will, hang on, I want to talk to you-”
“Yeah, well,” Will huffs, adjusting the collar of his jacket, “thanks, but I’ve actually had quite enough of hearing about what you want for one lifetime, so. I think I’ll pass on this one.”
OR: two boys, ten years, and a hell of a lot of drama <3

call me when you get a second - chapter two 🫧
we’re on each other’s team
“What?” he asks, voice very, very raspy. He sort of feels like he might be going into shock, because the world around him is suddenly silent except for a very loud ringing in his ears, and he nearly has to shake his head to clear it. “What?” He asks again, just in case Mike needed any clarification at his current state of disbelief.
Mike winces at Will’s non-reaction. “I told Lucas and Dustin that we’re together,” he says again, firmer this time, and then he must realize what Will’s about to ask - together how? - because he clarifies, “like, dating, together. You and me. Um. Yeah.”

i miss you (i hate it)
There must be something in his voice, something defeated, edging into dangerously familiar territory, because Max squints at him again, straightening her spine and shooting him her most serious look. “Mike, are you sure this is, like, okay?”
Mike scoffs. “Of course it’s not okay, Max. He looked- he was so beautiful. And he hates me.”
“No, I- I get that, and that sucks, but you’re not…” she pauses for a moment, clearly struggling to find the words. “You just seem more calm about it than I might have expected, and sometimes when you get like that it’s a sign that you’re about to do- to do something drastic. Like- calm before the storm, or whatever.”
Mike stops drumming his fingers against the table, giving her a long look. “I don’t do that anymore,” he says after a moment of consideration, “you know that.”
“I do,” Max allows, a little haltingly, “but it’s- it’s Will.”

look what we became…
Will blinks, takes another sip of his drink, and blinks again. There’s a dark haired guy dancing right in the center of the room, a lazy smile on his face, hands on the hips of the sandy-haired guy but eyes drifting vaguely across the room, disengaged.
Will stops blinking, heart dropping to somewhere around his toes. There’s plenty of skinny, dark haired guys in the world, several others in this room, in fact. Plenty of people wear sweaters with little white collars peeking out, and have curly black hair and freckles. The guy in the center of the room could be anyone, but those eyes-
-the eyes.

i want this like a cigarette
He flinches away, but Will’s grip on his hand is strong, so he doesn’t get very far. “Mike,” Will tries again, and this time, there’s no mistaking the kindness and worry in his voice. Mike freezes, and Will steps a little closer to his space, but still a safe distance away, far enough to give Mike space to breathe. “You look upset.”
Mike meets Will’s gaze and holds it, doing his damnedest to not look down at his lips; they’re close enough, now, that Mike could just lean in and kiss him, and there are people around but no one’s paying attention, and Mike doesn’t want to be nervous about this but he is, and he can still feel the phantom crush of people around him and it’s all just too much.
Instead of voicing all of that, though, he just nods as he looks away, at something over Will’s shoulder, and says, “We’re still doing this, right?”
