spn20rewatch: 2.15 tall tales // cn SA mention
watching early seasons supernatural is really funny like hello the actor that plays alfie/samandriel, hello the actor that plays emma, hello the actor that plays hannah... hello again the actor that plays hannah, hello the actor that plays garth's father-in-law, hello the actor that plays amelia's father, hello the actor that plays the evil witch from 8.15, hello the actor that plays dr hess, hello the actor that - oh that's just gabriel, hi. (i'm sure i've missed a few this is just off the top)
but to be honest i really don't like gabriel. some of it we can get into here: what he did to curtis was appalling. but most of what i don't like is in 5.08. but i certainly don't like that he's how we get introduced to a shitty racist porn running "gag."
most of what's interesting about this episode is getting glimpses into how dean and sam see each other - though even those glimpses are skewed by the fight gabriel's influence. and i don't feel like i have anything all that new to say about that.
the moment that sticks with me is dean and sam's varying reactions to curtis talking about his experience being abducted by gabriel's aliens.
CURTIS: They did tests on me. And, uh... They, uh... They probed me. [SAM turns his face away, struggling not to laugh] DEAN [seriously]: They probed you? CURTIS: Yeah, they probed me. Again and a— Again and – And again. And again and again and again... And then one more time. [DEAN looks away and makes a yikes face] [SAM is still trying not to laugh] DEAN [gravely]: Yikes. CURTIS: And that's not even the worst of it. DEAN: How could it get any worse? Some alien made you his bitch.
i'm not at all saying dean handles this perfectly and obviously some of his word choices could be better. but i find it significant that he takes curtis' story seriously as something violating and upsetting and meanwhile sam is struggling not to laugh.
this is the season where he's talked about chloroform and roofies and being violated with demon tongue. i know these are all maybe throwaway moments but if you tug on that thread, i think there's some serious stuff behind it.
dean's entire life is being thrown around and attacked and hurt and harmed by various monsters (human and otherwise) and i think it's important to look at his understanding of bodily autonomy.
