I’ve been asked by many French people whether in China there are similar traditions to “Galette du roi” (King Cake)—a french tradition in January when people get together sharing a delicious and scrumptious-looking cake. The lucky one will discover “la fève”, a tiny charm, buried inside one of the slices. (There are plenty of online articles explaining this tradition much better than I just did) The only similar experience that I had in China is during the Chinese New Year when my grandma hides a coin in one of the dumplings (eating dumplings during the CNY is a tradition in northern China). Whoever discovers the coin is supposed to have good fortune. Concerned by potential hygiene problems, grandma stopped putting coins and started putting brown sugar as fillings in the lucky dumpling. She used to help me cheat when I was little by folding the dumpling with a slightly different pattern so that I would know which one to pick. Those were the fun times! 🥟😋🥟 Do you also have a tradition of hiding small lucky object in food? #chinesenewyear2020 #cnytradition #chinesenewyeardumpling #galettedesrois #coininthedumpling #goodfortune #sliceoflife #tinyeyescomics (at Beijing, China) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7bmUFkC-jy/?igshid=a1vot3pcubo6
