Alysa Liu has added four-time US National Champion Jeremy Abbott to her coaching team.

In the article, Abbott talks about how she’s not done just because she had a growth spurt (which a lot of people have been saying), that she just needs to get used to her new body.

The article also talks about how Liu has not been able to see two of her coaches, Lee Barkell and Lori Nichol, because they’re in Canada. They were originally intended to be part of a team, headed by Massimo Scali. 

However, restrictions have meant they have to deal with talking over Zoom and FaceTime, and with Massimo being a former Ice Dancer, meant it was hard for her to get help that she needed for her jumps. This is apparently where Abbott comes in.

Abbott says the agreement goes through at least the 2022 Beijing Olympics. He also been working with Dinh Tran, stepping in because his main coach is based in Arizona. 

Abbott says that Liu is not struggling, and that the issues at the Las Vegas Invitational come from tweaking a part of her jump landings before the event, though he did say she is not planning to do a Quad or Triple Axel at Nationals. He says that she is a completely different skater, that she’ll be okay if she doesn’t podium at Nationals (though obviously they want that) because this is year of building for her, and that “it is a step, not the endgame.”
