Our Season Our Story (2010-2011)
Another school year in the books! This is also my last year serving as athletic director at Takoma Academy. It has been both an honor and blessing to move the program one step closer to EXCELLENCE. In an effort to "live, love, and leave a legacy" I can rest assured knowing that we've served well.
I have also received a profound education on "parent politics." An athletic director plays many roles - the coach's coach, facility manager, janitor, score keeper, chaperone, mom, dad, teacher, and politician. One has to learn to navigate these responsibilities with the skill of a surgeon in order to be effective. It is impossible to make everyone happy but you must have the courage to make tough, unpopular decisions when necessary. Cultivating a base of support among the students and parents you serve is critical to your success. It may well be your harbor in a storm.
I believe that you should do more than you are paid for. Make every effort to exceed expectations. Being a good athletic director requires nothing less. It may seem corny but I am grateful for the many long hours washing uniforms, planning seasons, mountains of paperwork, cleaning toilets, and following up with guidance counselors, teachers, and parents that has been a defining era in my life and will shape everything I do in the future. Being a coach can be a thankless job so you have to believe in what you're doing. Your satisfaction must come from knowing that you're helping your students pursue their dreams and build great life-long memories. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I'm looking forward to continuing my coaching career as the women's varsity coach. There is so much to learn. With more free time I'm able to really focus on taking it to the next level. I can' wait to get started!
Our Season Our Story (2009-2010)
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 (originally posted)
I'm wrapping up my first year as Athletic Director and Head Women's coach at our small Christian academy. The track & field season has begun. Fall and winter seasons have been quite the ride. Our men's and women's basketball teams lost in the semi-finals which was an unexpected disappointment to us all. Our volleyball and soccer teams also left us with a bad taste in our mouths. I started out last summer knowing that I had much to learn. I didn't know the half! All in all it's been fun coaching young people. I've learned so much. I've gotten to know so many great people who've made this a successful season - from our coaches, to our rookie point guard to our wonderfully supportive parents, to my uniform vendor who is always available with timely advice on EVERYTHING. Most importantly, I work for the best head of school there is. As a former manager and software consultant, I have never enjoyed working for an individual as much as I enjoy working with him. My relationship with Mr. Daniels may be the single most important part of my season so far. A friend and mentor. I look forward to helping him pursue his goals for future of the school. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences with you all and getting your feedback. I'd love to hear your coaching stories as well.
Notes
Last day of camp for the week. Another successful week in the books. Kids and coaches are about to have their pizza party with cupcakes and drinks to celebrate. I love being able to give the kids an opportunity to learn more about the game of basketball. I've been stuck behind a desk for the most part but I'm looking forward to getting out there on the court with them more in future. Just too much work to do! Somebody's got to pay these bills! Big thanks to Coach Hill, Coach Godette, Coach Wes Dunning, Coach Rike, Coach Julian, Big Cliff, my man JW and everyone else that help us pull this thing off.
And where we be with our campers, parents, and fans? Thank you for supporting the 2011 Takoma Tiger Summer Camps!
