Meet Ameena Matthews, Cobe Williams and Eric Bocanegra of Southside Chicago. They are ‘The Interrupters.’ These 3 amazing individuals do the very courageous, very difficult, very dangerous work of hands on, face to face conflict resolution by any means necessary in one of the most violence ridden communities of color in America. Instead of standing idly by, shaking heads and pointing fingers as the death toll rises, the interrupters foster non violent conflict resolution, communication skills and preservation of life. My dream is to see each member of our community step up and do their part to advance the diaspora. I know everyone cannot be proactive in the way the interrupters are but we can each play a role in the lives of our young people. Talk to them. Give them a chance to let you know them. Let them know you. You couldn’t imagine the beauty and positivity that can come from a simple ‘good morning young man/woman- have a beautiful day!’ You can be the difference between someone getting into a fight that ends fatally or those same people loving themselves enough not to feel like physical violence is worth it. Its all about showing each other LOVE!
