How is Malise pronounced?

I picked the name because of its visual similarities to malice, but I think it's proper pronunciation is something like 'Mall-ys.' Whatever feels natural~

Who are we and what do we do?

Hi everyone!

In our first post we would like to introduce COCAT, the NGO where we are working. COCAT is a platform of organizations integrated by those Catalan entities that organize international camps.

Basically, in COCAT they send Catalan volunteers abroad to take part in work camps in other countries and receive international volunteers in the national camps, organized by the local organizations.

We are learning how this network of entities works, helping with the registrations of volunteers and doing communication tasks.

Hey! I hope this is ok to ask about but I was curious about your original piece that you mention on occasion (cocat?). I'd like to know what it's about, or if you could share something you like about it or would want people to know.

Hi!! Of course it's okay to ask!!! I'm always eager to talk about cocat!! Thank you for asking!! This book is my baby, and I'm >////< glad that somebody is curious about it!

Putting this under a read more just in case I ramble a little~

If I were to tag cocat (which spelled out is City of Crime and Teeth), it would fall under the twisted and fluffy category. The focal point of the novel is the relationship between Malise, an unwilling and listless crime boss who sees no way out of his current position other than his own inevitable death, and his husband Riot, a man he married the night they met who has plenty of his own dangerous secrets. They both have their shortcomings, with Malise not knowing how to deal with his emotions and Riot believing that he'll never have a place he can truly call home. Neither one have any idea how to navigate this strange relationship they find themselves in, but they both dig their teeth in the moment they meet. It's immediate, simultaneous obsession for the both of them, and they change each other indefinitely. Their relationship would be considered toxic for anybody else, but it works for them.

I really love writing emotion, and that's a big part of Malise's journey. He always thought that he couldn't feel things because he'd never been taught how, but he actually feels too much, especially in regards to Riot. Meeting Riot is like a burst of color in his otherwise bleak world, and he doesn't know what to do with all of these new things that he's feeling. It confuses the hell out of him, but he'd burn the world for Riot's sake.

And Riot is such a little shit, too. I adore him. He's lived the past ten years on the streets, so when he's suddenly a trophy wife (Malise's words and a definite point of contention between the two) Riot sure as hell takes advantage of that to indulge himself and spend as much of Malise's money as he can. And he's anything but a trophy wife. He's strong and lithe and fiercely devoted to his incredibly stupid and reckless husband. He thinks his situation is temporary; he thinks that Malise will eventually get bored and kill him, and Riot hates how much he ends up loving him.

Cocat is honestly a bit different from what I usually write, if I'm being honest. It's a little dark, a little angsty, but it's also about two incredibly broken people, two victims of circumstance who firmly believe they're only capable of cruelty and pain but have to learn how wrong they are.

Also featured in this mildly violent package: a found family consisting of these two married dumbasses, a pair of knife-wielding twins (one of which is trans, but neither one wants to tell me who it is. And frankly, it's none of my business), possibly the worst but most well-meaning secretary ever, and an ace lesbian who is easily the most unhinged character I've ever written (and easily my favorites. I love her so much).

So yeah! This got away from me a little, but I don't usually get to talk about cocat ^^; so thank you again for asking! And if you were ever interested, I posted a tiny drabble here~

I am having a shit day. Can you tell me something about Malise and riot being love? I like hearing about their devotion to each other (even if/when they do not realize it themselves). Somehow I seem to have latched onto them for comfort 😅 I like reading about them very much!

Of course I can! I'm so sorry you're having a shit day <3 I'm sending you a very big hug. I'm not sure if this will make you feel better or worse, but here's a bit regarding Malise and Riot and their tumultuous relationship with love <3

When it comes to love, it's something that Malise isn't sure he can feel (which is silly because he does love. He loves and cares about those close to him so fiercely, he just doesn't realize it). He tells Riot that he's not sure he's capable of love, and it's something that they both accept very early in their relationship.

And despite being able to read Malise like no other, Riot fully believes him. He believes that Malise will never love him back, that what he feels will forever be unrequited, but it's okay, right? As long as he gets to stay by Malise's side, gets to make sure that the dumbass doesn't end up killing himself with his stupidity or recklessness, gets to love him like he deserves, then it's okay. Right?

But they're both very wrong. Malise does love Riot. He loves him so much that he comes close to shattering with it, and he will realize what it is that he's feeling.

Can you tell us some fun trivia about Malise and Riot? Stuff that you probably won’t put in your book explicitly but that you’ve thought about. And stuff like, I dunno. Their birthday, hair and eye colors, favorite food, fav color, fav place etc. haha just random stuff I guess 😂 I keep imagining Riot in Kirishima’s colors from My Hero Academia- red hair and red eyes ahahaha because of his Red Riot hero persona 😂

Sorry for the late reply, anon!! I wasn't feeling well yesterday ^^ of course I can give you some fun cocat trivia! I'm happy you're interested in my boys ^^

sdflksdjflsdjf Riot looks nothing like Kirishima, unfortunately ^^;;; I hadn't even taken that into consideration when I picked that as his self-appointed nickname. My Riot has black hair, styled more like Yuri Plisetsky from yoi. That sort of pretty, flowy, shoulder-length vibe, except Riot keeps the top half of his tied up and off his face. He likes a clear line of sight so that he has ample time to react to threats. His eyes are also a stormy blue, angry and destructive but also somehow comforting to Malise.

Riot's hobbies are drinking (wine, usually. A habit he picked up living on the streets because he could get a bottle of wine for cheap. He has an questionably high tolerance for alcohol, and Malise has never actually seen him drunk), bringing a knife to a gunfight, and spending his husband's money.

Malise doesn't have hobbies. He never learned that he was supposed to. Spoiling his husband is good enough. Riot may joke about one day killing Malise so he can inherit all of his money, but Malise has never actually denied Riot anything. He can't. He'll do anything to keep Riot from losing interest in him.

(Of course Riot knows this. As mysterious and unreadable as Malise thinks he is, Riot can read him like an open book. But he likes seeing Malise scramble to keep him interested, likes being spoiled and the powerful feeling it gives him to have such an influential man wound so tightly around his finger, so he never bothers stopping his husband. Malise will learn of Riot's devotion in time.)

If they were pokemon trainers, Malise would prefer poison-type. He'd have an entire team of poison, whether the composition worked well or not. Riot's team would be more well-rounded, but I think his favorite would be mimikyu. Certainly not because it reminds him of someone.
