Kwan Song HCs part I | BOCW

Note: Haenyeo are female divers who live in the Korean island of Jeju. They're known for their semi-matriarchal social structure along with their skill in diving for abalone and other forms of sea life.

Kwan Song was born on the South Korean island of Jeju on August 2nd, 1958.

She was given a boys’ name since “Kwan” is a boys name. The post-war era in South Korea was full of harder times for her family. Even her mainlander father knew she had to be resilient and stronger in order to make it through the rough impoverished times of Korea in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Kwan Song was tomboyish during her childhood. She always liked to go with choppy short haircuts as it reduced the weight she had in the water while diving. Furthermore, shorter hair proved to require less maintenance.

She started her training as a haenyeo when she was 11, first practicing with her friends in shallower waters and bringing in catches to bring more food on the table and get extra coin for gifts to her pregnant mother and also her grandparents.

She has a Jeju dialect that has faded away after moving to mainland Korea when she was 11.

Her Jeju dialect comes out sometimes when she is drunk. Her comrades have a hard time understanding her words when her Jeju dialect comes out.

As the eldest child in the household, Song led ancestral rites, especially parts such as offering rice wine. While this would traditionally go to the eldest son of the household, her family had no sons so she was able to perform it.

Kwan Song’s care/love language is gift-giving. It isn’t uncommon for her to drop in on an injured teammate’s room and give him a good herb or expensive seafood that’s good for his health (like a very expensive rare white sea cucumber that she got while diving).

Kwan Song had to work jobs while attending school in order to look after her family. This happened because her father passed away shortly once they moved to the mainland, which added onto the financial stresses of her family.

After moving to the mainland, Song was teased and bullied somewhat as a child for being tomboyish and also having a boy’s name.

Growing up as a haenyeo, Song wore a cotton bathing suit instead of a wetsuit because those weren’t available back then. Furthermore, Song and her mother believed in tolerating and getting accustomed to the cooler waters of Jeju during colder months of the year.

Song’s background as a haenyeo becomes an advantage during her going through the screening and training to become part of the 707th Special Mission Battalion “White Tigers”.

Kwan Song is somewhat accustomed to being in cold water for prolonged periods of time as well as being in fit shape and having good lung capacity.

Author's Note: I've been working on this part of lore for Song since last year. However, I hadn't gotten around to posting about it. Kwan Song is an underrated character with a lot of potential (I may be a bit biased though...). Canon just doesn't give enough details about her backstory. Therefore, I decided to add details to her backstory and help explain why she was able to become the first South Korean female operator in a combat unit. Full disclaimer: I'm Korean-American so I was able to add a few little things here and there. However, the Korean side of my family aren't from Jeju (which is quite different from the mainland).

Finally, I'd like to thank @zombie-nymph for really helping me a lot with developing Song's backstory as a haenyeo. She listened to my ramblings and helped provide some insight into several things which helped me develop a bit more of a structured backstory.
