Code Name: Viper | Capcom | Nintendo Entertainment System
Capcom’s Code Name: Viper (1990) was one of those games I rented a few times as a kid and absolutely loved. But I’ve been burned by nostalgic memories (Back to the Future 2 & 3) and was apprehensive when revisiting it recently. Will it hold up?
Turns out it’s still a hella lot of fun, almost a side-scrolling platformer take on Metal Gear (which came out the same year) and has a really really engaging soundtrack. I made it to the third stage but the game is really unforgiving: you can only take two hits before losing a life, and it appears the snipers can take you out with just one hit. This will definitely require a “use infinite energy” code on the Game Genie next time I try it.
Apparently the game is a riff on Rolling Thunder, which I’ve never played. Which do you prefer?
