Sometimes she misses Honnleath and its rougher beauty, but it doesn’t take long for South Reach to feel like home. One evening after a long day of apple harvesting Mia turns around and discovers that they’ve somehow, impossibly, built themselves a life. Its cozy and real even thought she always leaves a light in the window for those they’ve lost its comforting to know that the idea of putting down roots is no longer a frightening thing. Maybe, she thinks with a smile, they are going to be alright after all.

Cullen,

I was cleaning out some old bins when I found this very exceptional sketch. You’ll notice the strong lines of the mountains. the sweeping curves of the fields, the stalwart stick figure Templar vanquishing the…dragon?  Is that a dragon? Exactly how many legs do dragons have anyway? 

I don’t know if you remember drawing this, but I remember when you gave it to Mother and Father because after you had wondered off to find some other fancy as 5 year olds are want to do, Mother cried.   I remember confused at the time, but I think maybe she knew then who you were destined to be.  

Anyway, I thought you might like to see it.  How it survived the trip from Honnleath I have no idea, but I’m thankful. Little fragments of memories like this, they always feel like talismans to me, there to ward away the loneliness when it tries to come creeping in. 

Maybe you should start drawing again. But perhaps put a bit of research into Dragon anatomy…I’m fairly sure 8 is far to many legs.

Hey.

So this is weird right?  Usually I’m the one waiting to hear from you, wondering what happened, why you aren’t here. Sorry about that. This isn’t exactly how I planned on things working out, but we do what we can with what we have right? Right.

I know this letter said to read when you needed me, but here’s the thing, you don’t. You haven’t needed me for a long time (as loathed as I am to admit it, it hard to realize your little brother isn’t so little anymore), but maybe what you DO need is a reminder. So here goes:

You can do this. Whatever you’re facing, you are more than equipped to handle. I know this because I have watched you overcome adversity over and over and over again. Darkness has attacked from without and within and still you find your way.

So if you’re looking for advice my love, this is it: Trust your gut. You know the right path. Stop second guessing yourself and do what needs doing. If that’s not enough then talk to those around you that you trust. I’m so grateful that you have that place and those people. Together you’ve done impossible things. This will be no different. 

Now. Enough blathering from me. I’m getting sentimental, that never ends well. Get out there and go to work. Hopefully I’ll see you soon, but if not remember that I love you, more than I can possibly express. I’m so proud of you.
