#2746 - Codium fragile subsp. novae-zelandiae - Dead Man's Fingers
An edible green seaweed widespread on rocky Aotearoan beachs. In this case the rocks were basalt chunks from Blackhead. Presumably some had once been part of the layers of columnar basalt, set into hexagonal columns as deep lava pools cooled and shrank.
One of over 140 confirmed species in the genus, found on all but polar coastlines. Shipping has allowed some to become invasive species far outside their home range.
