HILLCREST PRIDE
by Cody Griffith
In mid-70s San Diego’s first Pride Parade was organized and in the years since it has grown to be one of the nation’s largest, attracting more than 100,000 cheering spectators to the city’s trendy Hillcrest neighborhood. In the summer of 2012 the Crest Cafe, on Robinson Ave near the parade route, celebrated its 30th anniversary by commissioning Cody Griffith to create a mural in time for the annual Pride celebration. The San Diego native Griffith, who studied illustration and design across the country at the Maryland Institute College of Art, wanted to create something easily identifiable from a distance but with layers of detail to enjoy as the view gets closer. Griffith’s final massive circus elephant design, combines elements of Pride, the Hillcrest neighborhood, and the cafe’s close proximity to the city’s iconic Balboa Park. @crestcafesd @sandiegopride
