The new leaves on coffee plants can be one clue in identifying them. Along with the branch structure and leaf / fruit node spacing, there are hints at the plant variety. The problem is that varieties aren’t often very genetically distinct, and while Coffea arabica self pollinates, it still will naturally hybridize and mutate in the farm or forest. These are two hydroponic plants I grow: green tipped one is Ethiopian selection 74165 from Jimma coffee research. I collected that seed from a farm in Limmu 2 years ago.
