Happy Happy Joy Joy!
Today’s spell gives us a little kick in the happy-ass. “Someone’s got a case of the Mondays” ... “oh, someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today!” We all go through times where it feels like we’re just paddling through negative muck; rather than just fantasizing about punching the next person who says some shit like this in the throat, let’s focus on awakening our inner joy. The rune we’re working with today is Wunjo. http://sunnyway.com/runes/meanings.html defines this rune as: Joy, comfort, pleasure. Fellowship, harmony, prosperity. Ecstasy, glory, spiritual reward, but also the possibility of going "over the top". If restrained, the meaning is general success and recognition of worth.
I’ve found in working with wunjo that the concept of going “over the top” has, for me, been more of a getting lost in bliss. On days when we need to reach down to find that bliss, wunjo’s joy is a catalyst for awakening inner happiness that we tend to let get buried under a lot of mundane crap. Wunjo will reach through the clutter of the negative feelings, energies, and general muck and turn on a spark within us. Start as usual with your coffee filter. Write the rune wunjo three times, chanting with each inscription: (1) Wunjo, wunjo, rune of joy! Awaken bliss within me. (2) Wunjo, wunjo, rune of joy! Happiness comes from inside. (3) Wunjo, wunjo, rune of joy! My inner light can’t hide! Ah, inner light. That is truly what we’re working with here. When we’re bogged down with worries, feelings of confusion, rejection, uncertainty ... or just plain old irritations with everything going on a round us, it’s important to retreat into our core and turn on that inner light - the one that shines from that core and can’t be stifled by everyone else’s bullshit. And when we’re lit from inside, our joy both fills and surrounds us. OK - enough blibbety blah ... on to our work. You can use your regular preferred brew, or I suggest for this one either a chocolate or vanilla flavored coffee. If you grind your beans, chant while grinding: These beans I grind, by power of mind, awaken joy in me. These beans I grind, by power of mind, awaken ecstacy. These beans I grind, by power of mind, inner light for all to see!
On to our herbs and spices: Let’s start with spearmint. I always have a ton growing all around the house, and like to add fresh leaves to my coffee. Dried, ground spearmint works just fine. Spearmint is connected with Venus. It evokes love, of course, healing, protection, money ... and of course, HAPPINESS. If you’re using leaves, lay the leaves in the pattern of Wunjo BENEATH your coffee grounds, focusing on awakening happiness. If using dried spearmint, then sprinkle in a thick pattern the rune Wunjo on top of the grounds. Next, we’re going to use lemon balm. The taste of lemon is actually quite great with the coffee; it cuts the bitter flavor and awakens the other flavors you may be working with. Lemon balm is a wonderful herb for awakening happiness. Once again, if you have leaves, lay the leaves in the pattern of Wunjo BENEATH your coffee grounds, focusing on awakening happiness. If using dried lemonbalm, sprinkle in a thick pattern the rune Wunjo on top of the grounds. Finally, nutmeg! Nutmeg is a holiday favorite, and is awesome for evoking a festive mood and atmosphere. I find that nutmeg is also a spark for awakening and boosting the properties of all of the other herbs and spices you are working with. And at this point, you get the idea ... sprinkle a thick pattern of nutmeg into the shape of Wunjo on top of your coffee grounds. So right now, we’ve got the rune evoked by six. Let’s do it by nine ... get your kitchen spoon or athame, and stir the shape of Wunjo into the grounds / herb/spice mixture three times, chanting: These herbs I grind, by power of mind, awaken joy in me. These herbs I grind, by power of mind, awaken ecstacy. These herbs I grind, by power of mind, inner light for all to see! Now brew away. This is not only a great mix for awakening our inner happiness, but is also tastes quite wonderful. Hope you enjoy! Feel free to leave comments, questions, results!
