There is definitely history. I would not be surprised if they were married. Or still are! But I headcanon:
a significant relationship in their youth, maybe even academy based (I love a good school romance)
that was bolstered and complicated by a rivalry while climbing the ranks and fell off due to distance resulting in casual cheating
and Katrina was like “If you’d asked we could have had an arrangement but instead you humiliated me so bye.”
and instead of throwing the engagement ring
(uh, I guess I just got them engaged…or it could be a class ring, or a gift, but point is, something shiny and expensive that represents his love for her)
instead of throwing the whatever ring in his face, as is her instinct cuz she is hella mad and wants nothing to do with him, she keeps it, because she earned it and she deserves it and also as motivation
and then they don’t really speak for a few years and it is JUST a rivalry to rise in the ranks
(which, clearly, she eventually wins, Admiral Katrina I salute you!)
but there aren’t that many captains in the fleet and there especially aren’t that many captains Gabriel Lorca trusts
their relationship settles into snarky, sassy, sniping good friends with a history

they could be besties since the academy
who have flirted with more, and come close a few times
and have drunken and/or despairing sex
and also celebratory, now and again, it’s not all doom and gloom!
they don’t get together because they don’t want to mess it up
but it does get in the way of cultivating other lasting relationships

they still need to talk about it
