Souvenir Coin Box

c. 1926

These souvenir coin boxes were used to raise money for the proposed National Negro Memorial in Washington DC. The building of the memorial was approved by congress in 1929 and President Calvin Coolidge signed the resolution on his last day in office. A planning commission was appointed by President Herbert Hoover, but a lack of financial support and the onset of the Great Depression prevented the building from ever being started and President Franklin D. Roosevelt abolished the planning committee in 1933.
