Colby Fire & CA Drought Emergency

You may have heard by now about the Colby Fire that has been affecting surrounding neighborhoods and forcing evacuations. If you are going to be outside this weekend, please be cautious of air quality and drought conditions.

In addition, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency in California, citing the worst drought in nearly a century. He is calling on residents to reduce their water usage by 20%.

Here’s how YOU can help (from http://eartheasy.com/live_water_saving.htm):

Take shorter showers. One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower while soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse.

Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush Just wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing.

Rinse your razor in the sink Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water instead of using running water.

Only wash full loads of laundry Also, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses added water for an extra rinse. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the load.

Minimize use of kitchen sink garbage disposal units In-sink 'garburators' require lots of water to operate properly. Dispose of food waste in the trash can or start a compost pile as an alternate method.

When washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing If your have a double-basin, fill one with soapy water and one with rinse water. If you have a single-basin sink, gather washed dishes in a dish rack and rinse them with a spray device or a panful of hot water

Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables Just rinse them in a stoppered sink or a pan of clean water.

Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge. Store drinking water in the fridge in a safe drinking bottle. If you are filling water bottles to bring along on outdoor hikes, consider buying a LifeStraw personal water filter which enables users to drink water safely from rivers or lakes or any available body of water.

so at my school, there's a sort of legendary hike we go on. we call it the hike to the A.

there are two parts to the trail: you can either go to the A, or you can go to the cross. i like hiking to the cross. 

as a lot of you know, recently there was a huge fire in the LA area:

i watched from the street as the A went up in flames. and if the huge A had caught fire, the cross definitely had. no chance of survival.

i woke up this morning and saw this:

i was so excited that the fire had somehow missed the flames completely, then i saw this:

somehow, when 5 homes and 17 other structures had burned down...the cross remained even when surrounded by flames. i'm not overthinking and assuming that it's some crazy message from God, but it is really, really cool.
