Jest Fabryka - Joanna Makabresku
1990
Steel-cold Polish wave minimalism
Joanna Makabresku, one of Poland’s most iconic cold wave bands, delivers something controlled and deeply absorbing.
Lebanon Hanover
I made a The Terror inspired Cold Wave playlist (with some sad bastard music sprinkled in, for good measure.)
If that's your sort of thing, you might also be interested in some goth-coded headcanons? Here you go:
꧁ঔৣ 𓋹 𝕿𝖊𝖗𝖗𝖊𝖇𝖚𝖘 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍 𝕮𝖑𝖚𝖇 𓋹ঔৣ꧂.⋆
Francis Crozier
Subdued elder goth. Has been there since the early beginnings, when nobody even used the term goth and he has never labeled himself as such. Has experienced every legendary band in their prime and will gladly tell you exactly why he thinks half of them are overrated. (But speak ill of the Banshees in his presence and heads will roll.)
Rumor has it that he punched Morrissey in the face one time.
Doesn’t go out much anymore, especially since he got sober. But will occasionally show up at a concert if he deems the act interesting enough. Can be seen at the edge of the crowd or all the way back, scowling. But if he nods his head or even taps his foot to the beat you can be sure he's enjoying himself and those kids on stage will probably go far.
James Fitzjames
Not really his scene, but he will sometimes accompany Francis to a gig and compliment people’s outifts. :)
James Clark Ross
Pretty much left the scene once he settled with wife and kids, but still likes the music. Keeps a framed photograph in his house that shows him and Francis in the 80s: James fully decked out in chalk white makeup, black eyeliner, hair teased into oblivion, torn fishnets, ankhs and safety pins. Francis in his favourite black leather jacked, hair cropped short and dyed bright red , holding up two fingers, clearly in the middle of telling the cameraman to fuck off.
Cornelius Hickey
Always lurking around the club, sporting the same costumey looking, generic romantic goth outfit with a black tophat and a scull cane. Influencer type. The regulars clock him as a poser, but he’s only there on a mission to lure impressionable baby bats into his orbit. (Crozier is immediately on to him and makes sure he gets banned from the club, which earns him a sort of one-sided arch enemy, as Hickey is obsessed with the man for some reason.)
Thomas Jopson
He’s still DJ Dolleyes in this universe, but with more eyeliner and black mesh. Went through a rough phase in his early 20s after his mum died and Thomas fled home to spend time in Berlin: Staying awake for days, crashing on filthy couches and almost losing himself amidst clubbing, drugs, and casual flings with people he didn’t really care about.
Those days are behind him now, he takes good care of his mind, body and soul and only surrounds himself with people he loves and who love him back. Is at his happiest when he can get a whole crowd into a trance, losing themselves in his meticulously crafted sets of EBM, industrial and Cold Wave music.
Edward Little
For the most part, Edward is a true connoisseur of what High Fidelity termed „Sad Bastard Music“. He had a bit of a goth phase as a lonely, emotional teen, later finding himself more drawn to post-punk and post-harcore. Used to play in a couple of bands and sometimes he misses it. When it comes to live music, he loves and seeks out the kind of concerts where he gets screamed in the face, where he can feel the bass deep inside his chest and the drums rattle his bones. He finds catharsis there, leaving drenched in sweat, ears ringing and head blissfully cleared of all thoughts.
Silna
Well established artist, involved in several groups and her own solo projects. People most commonly know her either as a visual artist or as the lead singer of Tuunbaq, a cold wave duo featuring lyrics in inuktitut, where her ethereal vocals are contrasted with heavy, aggressive beats. While she is known to be an expressive performer, she tends to be quiet and aloof off stage until she knows exactly where she’s at with people. Once she trusts you, she’s hilarious.
Henry Collins
The club’s lead sound technician. Behind his professional attitude, people often take him for a typical, slightly nerdy metal dude. What they don’t expect is the long running, extremely angsty campaign of „Vampire the Masquerade“ he’s DMing in his basement.
John Irving
Shy, nerdy guy in a Star Wars shirt. He grew up quite sheltered and christian and now starts to experiment with different parts of his personality he doesn't really know much about yet. In Collins' campaign he plays a seductive female vampire who flirts with her victims before she bites their heads off. Can come off as a bit intense at times, but for the most part his fellow players and friends are happy he's come out of his shell.
George Hodgson
I don't know, somehow I picture him with stripy fingerless gloves, playing piano and /or accordeon in a dark cabaret band? Might also work on a stop motion film in his attic.
It's either that or he's dressed in plain black button ups and owns a gigantic walk-in closet to house his extensive movie collection, including rare and almost impossible to find 70s horror films
